1. Rain and melted snow
When rain falls or snow melts, some of the
water flows over streams that join up to form
rivers.

Water from rain or melted snow soaks into the
soil. In some places, water comes out of the
ground as a spring. It becomes the source of
a river.

A few rivers have a lake as their source. Rivers in
high mountain areas start at the edges of
melting glaciers.

1. A river : a natural flowing water course
2. A stream : a small narrow river
3. A lake : a large body of water surrounded by land
4. A glacier : a slowly moving mass or river of ice
formed by the accumulation and compaction of
snow on mountains or near the poles.
5. A spring : water pressure causes a natural flow of
groundwater onto the earth's surface.
