INTRODUCTION
o On Thursday 22nd of may 2025, I was sent to
the location UGHW-45 to observe the plug-
back operation.
o Spent 2 weeks in the field during which I
observed several operations pertaining to
plug-back job.
o Subsequent slides would capture some of the
lessons learnt from these operation.
WELL OBJECTIVE
o The primary objective is to develop a
shallower reservoir at approximately 9,150ft.
o Secondary objective is to appraise the deeper
sands and subsequently plug-back after
appraisal.
WHAT IS A PLUG-BACK OPERATION
• A plug back operation is an operation that is
carried out to seal off some sections of a
wellbore (open-hole) during a drilling
operation.
• Plug back operations can be carried in the
following scenarios:
o To seal-off deeper sections of a wellbore
after appraisal
o To temporarily abandon some sections of the
well during side-track
OBJECTIVE OF UGHW-45 PLUG-BACK OPERATION
The primary goal of this operation was to permanently abandon the deeper sections
of the wellbore by setting cement plugs from approximately 11,073 to 12,073 ft (Plug
1) and 9,150 to 9,650ft (Plug 2). This was aimed at isolating the reservoirs at these
depths to achieve the following:
o Prevent fluid migration
o Well integrity
o Ensure HSE compliance
SEQUENCE OF OPERATION (1/2)
• Run in stinger and circulate the wellbore clean
with OBM
• Set slips on the drill pipe
• Pressure test the surface line to 4000psi
• Pump 37 bbl of spacer (5BPM)
• Pump 171 bbl of cement slurry (5BPM)
• Pump 4.8 bbl of spacer
• Pump 188 bbl of Oil Based mud (6BPM)
SEQUENCE OF OPERATION (2/2)
• Run in stinger and circulate the wellbore
• Spot 47 bbl of Hi-vis as the base
• Pump 40 bbl of spacer
• Pump 85 bbl of cement slurry
• Pump 4.8 bbl of spacer
• Pump 151 bbl of Oil based mud
• WOC until cement achieve at least 500 psi
• Pull the stinger out to the surface.

CONCLUSION
In conclusion, a plug-back operation is a necessary and highly valuable well
intervention, designed to strategically control downhole conditions.
This operation present challenges, such as pulling drill pipes out of unset cement
due to lost circulation which can increase operational risk.
However, the potential to access new shallower reservoir and enhance
production, highlights the value of this technique in optimizing well performance.
