Endogenic Process

Endogenic processes occur beneath the Earth's surface and include folding and faulting, primarily along unstable plate boundaries. Folding results from compressional forces that bend rock layers, while faulting involves fracturing and displacement of rocks due to tension or compression. Types of plate boundaries include divergent, convergent, and transform, leading to various geological activities such as volcanism, metamorphism, and earthquakes.

ENDOGENIC

PROCESS
ENDOGENIC PROCESS

• PROCESS THAT IS FORMED OR OCCURRING

BENEATH THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH.
• IT CAUSES THE GROUND TO MOVE.
FOLDING AND
FAULTING

MAIN ENDOGENIC PROCESS

• THEY TAKE PLACE MAINLY ALONG THE PLATE
BOUNDARIES, WHICH ARE ZONES THAT ARE
NOT STABLE. (LOCATION WHERE TWO PLATES
MEET).
FOLDING
• WHEN TWO FORCES PUSH TOWARDS EACH
OTHER FROM OPPOSITE SIDES, THE ROCK
LAYERS BEND INTO FOLDS.
• FOLDS ARE FORMED DUE TO COMPRESSIONAL
FORCES.
FAULTING
• FRACTURING AND DISPLACEMENT OF MORE
BRITTLE ROCK STRATA ALONG A FAULT PLANE
EITHER CAUSED BY TENSION OR COMPRESSION.
• A BREAK IN ROCKS ALONG WHICH VERTICAL OR
HORIZONTAL ROCK MOVMENT OCCURRED.
• FAULT LINES – LINES OF WEAKNESS WHICH ALLOW
MOLTEN ROCK TO RISE UP ONTO THE EARTH’S
SURFACE WHEN THERE IS A VOLCANIC ACTIVITY
NEARBY.
TYPES OF FAULT
•NORMAL FAULT (CONVERGENCE)
•REVERSE FAULT (DIVERGENCE)
•TEAR FAULT (TRANSFORM)
TYPES OF PLATE
BOUNDARIES
DIVERGENT PLATE BOUNDARY

• OCCURS WHEN TWO TECTONIC PLATES MOVE

AWAY FROM EACH OTHER.
• EARTHQUAKES ARE COMMON AND MAGMA
RISES FROM EARTH’S MANTLE TO THE
SURFACE, SOLIDIFYING TO CREATE NEW
OCEANIC CRUSTS.
CONVERGENT PLATE
BOUNDARY
• OCCURS WHEN TWO PLATES COME TOGETHER.
• OCEANIC CRUST IS OFTEN FORCED DOWN INTO THE
MANTLE WHERE IT BEGINS TO MELT. MAGMA RISES
THROUGH THE OTHER PLATE, SOLIDIFYING INTO
GRANITE, WHICH MAKES UP THE CONTINENTS.
• CONTINENTAL CRUST IS CREATED AND OCEANIC
CRUST IS DESTROYED.
TRANSFORM PLATE
BOUNDARY
• TWO PLATES SLIDING PAST EACH OTHER.
• ARE COMMONLY FOUND IN OCEAN BASINS
AND OCEAN RIDGES.
SUBSEQUENT
ENDOGENIC PROCESS
VOLCANISM or magmatism
• VOLCANIC ACTIVITY OR IGNEOUS ACTIVITY
• ERUPTION OF MOLTEN ROCK (MAGMA) ONTO
THE SURFACE OF THE EARTH.
• OCCURS BECAUSE OF EARTH’S INTERNAL HEAT,
AND IS ASSOCIATED WITH TECTONIC
PROCESSES AND A PART OF THE ROCK CYCLE.
• EXTRUSIVE VOLCANISM - OCCURS ON THE
SURFACE OF THE EARTH FROM LAVA.

• INTRUSIVE VOLCANISM – OCCURS FROM

MAGMA WITHIN THE CRUST OF THE EARTH.
METAMORPHISM
• OCCURS WHEN THERE IS PRESSURE AND HEAT
APPLIED TO GEOLOGIC STRUCTURES WHICH
LEAD TO THE FORMATION OF METAMORPHIC
ROCKS.
EARTHQUAKE (SEISMIC
ACTIVITY)
• A SUDDEN SHAKING OR VIBRATION IN THE EARTH’S
CRUST.
• CAN ALSO BE TRIGGERED BY MOLTEN ROCK
MOVING UP INTO THE CHAMBER OF THE VOLCANO
BEFORE ERUPTING.
• OCCURS WHEN PLATES SLIP OR SUDDENLY MOVE
PAST EACH OTHER, THE BUILD-UP STRAIN IS
RELEASED ALONG THE FAULT CREATING FRACTURES.
