Tips for Answering Chemistry

Paper 2 – SPM 2024 (DLP)

Prepared for DLP SPM Chemistry
Students
Paper 2 Structure Overview
• Section A (20 marks): Structured Questions
• Section B (20 marks): Experiment-based
(Planning/Analysis)
• Section C (20 marks): Essay (Choose 1 of 2)

• Focus on understanding, application, and

explanation.
Section A: Structured Questions -
Tips
• - Read command words (State, Explain, Draw,
etc.)
• - Use exact scientific terms
• - Include units and show all working
• - Draw diagrams clearly with labels
Section A: Sample Q&A
• Q: Explain why aluminium does not corrode
easily in moist air.
• ✔ Aluminium reacts with oxygen to form a
layer of aluminium oxide, which is
impermeable.
• ✘ It is a strong metal. (Too vague)
Section B: Experiment-Based
Questions - Tips
• - Identify variables: Manipulated, Responding,
Controlled
• - Write procedures in passive voice
• - Use correct apparatus and measurements
• - Show logical steps in order
Section B: Sample Experiment Q
• Q: Investigate how temperature affects
enzyme activity.
• ✔ Use catalase + H2O2, vary temp, measure
oxygen
• ✘ Just mix them and see what happens. (Too
vague)
Section C: Essay Questions - Tips
• - Structure with intro, body, conclusion
• - Use keywords from the question
• - Include equations, diagrams, and real-life
application
• - Use scientific language
Section C: Sample Essay Q
• Q: Explain how water is treated in a treatment
plant.
• ✔ Steps: Screening → Coagulation →
Sedimentation → Filtration → Chlorination
• Explain purpose of each step.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
• - Missing units in calculations
• - Mislabelled or missing diagrams
• - Giving one-word answers for 'Explain'
• - Writing memorised but irrelevant essays
Extra Sample Q: Titration (Section
A)
• Q: Name the indicator suitable for titration
between HCl and NaOH.
• ✔ Phenolphthalein or Methyl orange
• ✘ Litmus (Not suitable for titration)
Extra Sample Q: Organic Chemistry
• Q: Name the homologous series for
CH3COOH.
• ✔ Carboxylic acid
• ✘ Alkane (Incorrect functional group)
Extra Sample Q: Mole Concept
• Q: Calculate the number of moles in 4.4 g of
CO2.
• ✔ Mr of CO2 = 44, Moles = 4.4 / 44 = 0.1 mol
• ✘ No working shown = 0 marks
Quick Revision Keywords
• Acids/Bases: pH, neutralisation, salt
• Electrolysis: anode, cathode, oxidation
• Periodic Table: period, group, electron
arrangement
• Organic: isomer, functional group,
homologous series
Bonus Quiz Slide
• 1. What is the pH of a strong acid?
• 2. State one advantage of recycling polymers.
• 3. Name one gas collected at the anode during
electrolysis of brine.
• 4. What is the colour change of
phenolphthalein in alkali?
• Answers at the end!
Student Revision Checklist
• - I can define and explain key chemistry terms.
• - I can answer structured and essay questions.
• - I can plan experiments with variables.
• - I can balance chemical equations.
• - I’ve practised with past year questions.
