Scie Lesson 6

The document discusses the Earth's rotation and revolution, explaining their effects such as the occurrence of day and night, the changing seasons, and the Coriolis Effect. It outlines how the Earth's tilt and movement around the sun result in varying daylight hours and temperatures across different regions. Additionally, it includes activities and assessments to reinforce understanding of these concepts.

MODULE
What I Have
Learned
The words/phrases inside the box describe the rotation
and/or revolution of the Earth. Choose and write the
words/phrases inside the circles below. If the word/phrase
describe both rotation and revolution of the Earth, write
them in between the 2 circles. The first word in the box is
done as an example.
What’s
New ACTIVITY 1
Objective: Describe the effects of the Earth’s motion
Procedure:
1. Observe the pictures below and answer the guide questions
that follow.
a. What do you think would be the effect of the Earth’s rotation if at
times it faces the sun and there are times that it is away from the sun as
it moves?_________________________________________

b. You have learned that the tilted Earth moves around the sun. It
receives different amount of light as it moves in different positions
around the sun. What do you think is the effect of the revolution of
the tilted Earth which is being experienced in different parts of the
world?_____________________________________________________
After carefully examining the pictures in WHAT’S NEW, you
were able to tell the effects of the rotation and revolution
of the Earth.

What are these

effects?
Earth’s Rotation
1. It causes day and night. As the Earth spins on
its own axis, there are times that it faces the sun
and times that it is away from the sun. One Earth
day or one rotation of the Earth is consists of a
day time and a night time. The part of the Earth
that faces the sun is day time wherein we receive
light from the sun.
Then as the Earth turns we move away from the sun
and experience night time wherein the surroundings
become dark. A day time and a night time is
equivalent to 24 hours.

It happens that it would be day time in our country

but night time in other parts of the world. But since
the Earth is tilted 23.5 degrees as it moves in the
Solar System, we do not receive exactly 12 hours of
daytime and 12 hours of nighttime all the time in all
parts of the Earth. The length of
day time and night time differs in different places and
in different times of the year.
2. It causes the sun to rise in the east and
sets in the west. This is due to the
counterclockwise direction of the Earth’s
rotation from west to east. As the Earth
rotates we can see the sun rising in the east
which is the start of day time wherein we are
in the part of the Earth facing the sun, but as
it continue turning in its axis, we can see the
sun setting in the western horizon.
3. It causes the Earth to flattened at the poles
and bulging at the sides. This is why the Earth
is not perfectly round. It is an oblate spheroid.
It was Isaac Newton who first propose that the
Earth is not perfectly round and that it is
compressed at the poles and bloated or
enlarged at the sides in the equator.
4. It causes air and water to deflect. To deflect
means curve, swerve or bend to the right or to
the left and change directions. This is called the
Coriolis Effect. The spinning of the Earth on its
axis causes the direction of the air and ocean
currents moving in long distances to curve or
bend instead of moving straight. They swerve to
the right in the Northern Hemisphere and to the
left in the Southern Hemisphere. This is an effect
of the turning of the Earth in its axis. This cause
changes in the weather patterns due to the
movement of the air.
Earth’s Revolution:
1. It causes the occurrence of seasons in
different parts of the Earth. As the tilted Earth
revolves, it receives different amount of
radiant energy from the sun depending on its
distance and position. This is why temperature
varies and changes in different parts of the
world. This is also the reason why we
experience summer, winter, spring and
autumn.
Other parts of the Earth have only 2 seasons like
our country, the Philippines, this is because we are
located above the equator which receives more
amount of sunlight. We only experience the wet
(rainy) and dry (summer) season.
2. It causes the occurrence of a leap year.
Since the Earth revolves around the sun every
365.25 days, we add 1 day in our calendar
(February 29) every 4 years which we call as a
leap year. (0.25 X 4 revolutions – 1 day). A
leap year has 366 days. The next leap year
will be in 2024. After 2024, when do you think
is the next leap year?
Assessment

Write TRUE or FALSE on the blank before

each number.
__________ 1. The Earth rotates every 24 hours.
__________ 2. The Earth rotates around its orbit.
__________ 3. The Earth rotates in a
counterclockwise direction.
__________ 4. The Earth revolves around the
sun every 365 ¼ days.
__________ 5. Axis is the imaginary path where
the Earth moves around the sun.
_____ 1. We experienced four seasons in our
country.
_____ 2. Leap year occurs every 2 years in our
calendar.
_____ 3. One spin of the Earth on its axis is
equivalent to 24 hours.
_____ 4. The swerving of the direction of air
currents is due to the Earth’s rotation.
_____ 5. The rising and setting of the sun is a
result of the Earth’s revolution
around the sun.

REVOLUTION on the space provided before
each number.
A. The statements in each number describe
the movements of the Earth. What do
you call this movement?
__________ 1. It spins like a top.
__________ 2. It goes around the sun.
__________ 3. It moves around its axis.
__________ 4. It turns around its center.
__________ 5. It circles around in its orbit.

parts of the world.
