• TRANSGENDER-
– is the state of one’s
gender identity or gender
expression not matching
one’s assigned sex.
• Heterosexuality-
– Romantic or sexual attraction or behaviour
between persons of opposite sex.
- Homosexuality
- is a romantic or sexual attraction or behaviour
between of the same sex or gender.
• Bisexuality
– is romantic or sexual attraction or behaviour
towards both males and females. It is also called
Pan Sexuality.
• Asexuality or no sexuality
– –is the lack of sexual attraction to anyone.
• Trans Man- individuals who were born into
biologically female bodies but identity as
male.
• Trans Woman- those who were born into
biologically male bodies but are female-
gendered.
History of Pathology
• In 1994, Gender Identity Disorder (GID)
replaced “Transsexualism”as the official
diagnosis for gender non-conforming
individuals (American Psychiatric
Association,APA 2000).
BARRIERS TO HEALTH CARE
• Lack of legal protection to prevent against
discrimination by providers
( Kammerer,Mason,and Connors,1999)
• Inadequate finances
• Providers who are not competent or willing
• Psycho medical gate keeping- counselling
Transgender Theory
• Many transgender people now identify as
“gender queer” (ex. no gender category)rather
than “male or female”(American Association
Task force on Gender Identity and Gender
Variance,2009).
• Gender queer- also known as non-binary, is a
catch all category for gender identities that are
not exclusively masculine or feminine
identities.
• Gender queer people may express a
combination of masculinity and femininity, or
neither.
Commonly used Terms
• Trans- short for transgender or transsexual
• Ex. Trans people, trans community, he or
she is trans.
• Trans girl- and trans women- male to
female
• Trans guy,trans boy and trans man- female
to male.

pronouns.
