The document compares natural resource management practices between Haryana and Telangana, highlighting issues such as soil degradation, water scarcity, and agricultural challenges in both states. Haryana faces declining forest areas and groundwater over-exploitation, while Telangana deals with soil erosion and dependency on river systems for irrigation. Both states are implementing various government schemes to promote sustainable agriculture and improve resource management.

MANAGEMENT OF

NATURAL
RESOURCES
Comparison of management of Natural
Resources between Haryana and Telangana
What is natural
resource management?

Natural resource management refers to

the management of resources such as
animals, plants, soil, land to improve the
quality of life. It focuses on how they
could possibly be managed for our today
and tomorrow.
It deals with the way in which people
interact with natural landscapes.
How can • Use of alternative sources of power
such as solar and wind energy.
• Plant trees to prevent soil erosion.
we • Practicing of judicious ways
to conserve water in our homes.
manage • Use pipelines to transport oil.
• Growing of vegetation in catchment
natural areas.
• Use earth-bags instead of plastic and

resources? paper bags.

• Make use of electronic mails.
• Make use of electronic mails.
Haryana
Forested areas in Haryana State are declining due to
harsh conditions, overgrazing, the expansion of farmland
and rapid urbanization. Haryana ranks 22nd in fruit
production in the country with a total production of
737.82 thousand MT from an area of 60.92
thousand. Haryana ranks third in the country with a total
storage capacity of 116.11 lakh.

The Singareni Collieries Company
Limited excavates coal from these
mines for industrial needs and
thermal power stations. Telangana is
also rich in limestone deposits that
cater to cement factories. Telangana
has other mineral resources
like bauxite and mica.
Soil Resource
•The problems of soil degradation
(soil compaction, soil salinity,
sodicity, water logging, and
pesticide residue), multiple
nutrient deficiency, low organic
carbon content and decline in the
total factor productivity have
been observed under different
production systems in the State.
Also the diversion of agricultural
land for non agricultural use is an
emerging big problem.
Soil
resources
•Major soil types of Telangana include red sandy,
dubbas chalkas, deep red loamy, and very deep
black cotton soils. The inherent productivity of many
lands has been dramatically reduced as a result of
soil erosion, accumulation of salinity, and nutrient
depletion.Global estimates show an increasing
trend in degraded areas, with other areas becoming
vulnerable to various forms of degradation. On
computing the extent of soil erosion in Telangana
alone from the report by Reddy et al. (2005), it was
found that more than two-thirds of the TGA of the
state is affected by soil erosion. This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC B
•At present, agriculture consumes about 80%
of water. The availability of good quality water

Water
for assured irrigation is about 60% in the
State. This availability of irrigation water will
further decline in future due to more demand
of fresh water for domestic and industrial use.

Resourc
Over exploitation of ground water in Haryana
is emerging as a serious threat. About 65% of
ground water resource in Haryana is brackish.
Moreover, the fresh water is being polluted

es
through release of untreated industrial
effluents and sewage water in the canal
system.
Water resources
The development of Irrigation in Telangana is
mostly dependent on Godavari & Krishna
Rivers and their tributaries, Tanks & Ponds.
Tanks are the most important resources of
Telangana. There are 46,531 Nos of water
bodies varying from very large tanks to small
ponds & percolation tanks. Restoration &
Renovation of tanks has been taken by I&CAD
Department.In addition, the Department is
also in charge of command area development
works, Flood Control works in the State. For
the early completion of ongoing projects and
to modernize the existing Irrigation Projects in
the state, financial assistance is being taken
from Rural Infrastructure Development Fund
(RIDF) (NABARD), JICA (Japan International
Co-operation Agency), GOI accelerated
irrigation benefit programme (AIBP) and
World bank assistance in addition to the
Normal State plan.
•Adoption of HYV/Hybrids along
with production and protection

Crop technologies, supported by

appropriate infrastructure and

Improve policies, led to many significant

achievements. The role of crop
varieties/hybrids in enhancing
ment crop productivity has been
tremendous. However, yields of
many crops are plateauing.
Crop improvement
• At least 25% of the financial
target allocated to the State
must be earmarked to
Agriculture crop sector in drip
including Sugar cane,
Sericulture etc.
• Providing of 10 years after sales
service to all Beneficiary farmers
instead of 5 years earlier.
• Providing of crop wise
agronomical manual printed in
Telugu to all farmers.
• Providing of service centers by
MI Companies at all Revenue
Divisional Head Quarters.
Pest management (Haryana)
•In the recent past, disease like
yellow rust in wheat has
appeared as a major challenge
in Haryana. Similarly,
management of weeds has
emerged as a major problem
while adopting DSR and CA
technologies.
Pesticide Management
(Telangana)
•Implementing the Operational Directives calls for a Pest Management Plan to be
implemented by the project. The PMP must be seen as part of the EMF. In the screening
process no chemicals listed under WHO classification Class Ia, lb and II is permitted. The
chemicals and their classification is provided in the annex of this report. As part of the
training being taken up of those involved in the screening aspect of the EMF, capacity
building and information on pesticide classification must be provided. The other aspects
to be considered in the screening process are: * Selective against target pests
• Safe for beneficials
• Active for about 4 weeks
• Weather and u/v proof
• No toxic residues
• Safe for humans and livestock
The state as well as central governments have been and
are continuously making efforts to promote agriculture
and make it more profitable and an attractive option.

• Agricultural Loan : The total agricultural loan disbursed in the country during 2015-
16 was Rs. 877527 crore. Haryana stands 8th in agricultural loan disbursement in
the country with 5.67 per cent of the total disbursement in the year.
• Kisan Credit Card : Government of India introduced the Kisan Credit Card scheme
(KCC) scheme in 1998 as an innovative credit delivery mechanism to enable the
farmers to meet their production credit requirements in a timely and hassle free
manner.
• Major State Schemes : The State Government has launched Pradhan Mantri Fasal
Bima Yojna to mitigate losses in the farm sector and provide financial support to
the farmers in the event of failure of notified crops namely, paddy, bajra, maize
and cotton in Kharif and wheat, barley, gram and mustard in the Rabi season.
