STEP 3
UNIVERSAL DECLARATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS (UDHR)
HOW APARTHEID CAN BE SEEN AS A VIOLATION OF HUMAN RIGHTS
This essay will attempt to discuss how apartheid is/was seen as a violation of human
rights . Apartheid was legally reinforced in May 1948 . The word apartheid meaning
separateness .
The UDHR was drew up in 1948 December by the UN , which stated that all people
whatever their race , gender or religion is are equal and have the same rights as
everyone else . The UDHR stated how everyone had rights , although the South African
government clearly violated all those laws . The group areas act and the pass laws act
can also be an example of how human rights were violated .
The group areas act segregated black people away from white people and suburban
areas . This action made black people feel inferior and disliked by other races . The
group areas act caused forced removals for black people even though the UDHR stated
that everyone had the freedom to have property or won a property and to live wherever
they desired , this clearly violated a law in the UDHR and violated human rights . The
pass laws restricted movement for black people and the act took away the right of
freedom of movement away from black people , as they had to have little booklets ,
which was referred to as a “dompas” to be able to move freely around .
A few of the laws in the UDHR stated that “No one should suffer torture , or inhuman
punishment . No one should be put in prison without trial” , although many black people
suffered torture from white policemen and inhuman punishments like being brutally
harmed by police dogs and many black people were put in prison without any form trial ,
especially protestors . Another law stated that “All people have the right to travel freely in
their own country” , but black people were forced to carry a dompas , which was a little
booklet which allowed them to be able to go to places . “People have the right to take part
in the government of their country” , but only white people could vote and blacks were not
allowed to do so . “Education should be free and compulsory” , although black people had
to go to unappealing schools , and their education was not associated with white people .
Meaning that the SA government violated human rights .
In conclusion many of the black people felt as if their eights were violated , but the
government did not pay attention or care . In which majority of the (UDHR) was violated
during the apartheid era . All the human rights that were violated corresponded to the acts
that were not to be done to any person but the South African government broke majority of
those laws .
STEP 6
REFLECTION
♡The challengers was having to find the specific dates of the
events .
♡I learnt how to summarize the information that websites
provided me with .
♡My perceptions changed because this topic taught me that I do
not have to go through what black people went through during
apartheid and I have the freedom to pursue and do many things
black people could not .
♡Yes , I think it is important to learn about apartheid at school
because it teaches and tells us about unfair human rights that
were inforced in our country . It teaches us to take gratitude in
things like being able to get a good education and being able to
