Light Dark Shadow

The document explains the concepts of light and dark, defining light as a type of energy that allows us to see, while dark is the absence of light. It describes sources of light, distinguishing between natural (like the sun and stars) and man-made (like light bulbs) sources, and discusses how some objects, such as mirrors and the moon, reflect light rather than produce it. Additionally, it covers how light travels in straight lines, the properties of transparent, translucent, and opaque objects, and the formation and size of shadows.

What Is Light?

Light is a kind of energy. Light from the Sun

lights up the world around us. Light lets us
see.

Day time Night time

What Is Dark?

Dark is the absence of light.

If there is no light from a light source, it
will be dark.
What Is Dark?

Think about times when it is dark, or

places where it is dark. Which sources of
light are absent, or switched off?

Can we see in the dark?

Let’s think
about where
we think light
comes from….
Sources of light:

Anything that gives out light of its own is called a

source of light. The Sun, light bulbs, lightning and
fire are sources of light.

Light Source Sorting
Can you sort the set of cards?

Identify the cards that are sources of light,

and which ones are not.

Can you explain your reasons?

Light Source
The Tricky Ones!
Most things are not the sources of light. We are able
to see them because they reflect light.

Some objects are tricky - the moon, the window and

the mirror are some examples.
These objects look like light sources, but they are
not!

w
Moon
The moon is not a light source because it
does not make its own light.
We can see the moon because it reflects
the light from the sun and we see the moon
from the Earth like it is shining. The light from
the Sun bounces off the surface of the moon.
Window
The window is not a light source. It is an
opening that lets the light from the sun or
other light source into the room.
Mirror
The mirror is not a source of light because it
does not make its own light. It reflects light
from other sources.
Reflectors of Light
Some objects reflect light. They are not light
sources but they reflect light given by something
else.

1. Straight: Without a curve or bend.
2. Transparent: let all light pass
through.

3. Translucent: let some light pass

through.

4. Opaque: let no light pass

through.
5. Block: Stop movement by putting
something in the way.

6. Shadow: The dark area that is

made
when an object blocks the light.
How Does Light Travel?

Light travels in a straight line.

When light hits an object, it is reflected (bounces off).
If the reflected light hits our eyes, we can see the object .

Transparent
If an object is transparent, it means light
completely passes through it and you can see
clearly through it.
Translucent
If an object is translucent, it means that some
light passes through it but the light is scattered
so you can’t see clearly through it.
Opaque
If an object is opaque, it means no light can pass
through it. It blocks the light.
SHADOW
A shadow is made when an object blocks light.

Light travels in a straight line, so if it is blocked there must be a

shadow formed.
SHADOW
A shadow is a dark place made when an
object blocks light. You can see many
shadows on a sunny day.
