Problem Identified
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
• The problem statement on which the team is focusing on
which is regarding the issue of the transportation of the
physically challenged people and elders having issue of
mobility. It is observed by the members of the team and in
general that physically challenged people and elders have to
rely on some other people either their relatives or medical
aid for transportation as they are not having enough human
power to travel.
Problem Identified
Background:
• Currently the above mentioned problem has been solved
using the human powered wheelchair or by battery powered
wheelchair, when the indoor travel or the travel distance is
low. In the case of human powered wheel chair a great
amount of human power is required to travel from one place to
another while the other solution that is the battery operated
wheel chair eases the human power or it can be also sad that
it almost removes the human power. In both the cases there is
one more problem that is associated in the initial that is get in
and final that is get out stage, during both the stages the
assistance of the medical aid or relatives id required which
make the user dependent on people.
• When the travel distance is high, there is one more solution
available that is the hand operated human powered tricycle
which is normally being used by the people who has the
difficulty in the mobility of the legs. This solution promises the
commute to a larger distance in comparison either of the
wheelchairs but it still does not solves the problems
associated with either of the wheelchairs

What excites you about this theme:

• Our team understood the meaning of sustainable mobility by
breaking the word itself. The word Sustainable means to develop
something without compromising the availability of the resources
to the next generation and also fulfills the need of this generation.
The second part that is mobility we understood that it is related to
the transportation. By combining the both the words the meaning
which we understand is that the development of a transportation
system or a modification in existing transportation system in such
manner that the next generation will have ample amount of
resources, so that they can show their innovation and creativity on
development of a better transportation system of that generation.
In term of excitement we choose this theme because automobile
or transportation is very crucial part not only of the economy but
also for the development of the nation.

Why did you chose this theme

• We chose this theme to show our innovation and creativeness in
terms of mobility without the compromising the resources.
• The problem which we have identified is related to the transportation
of the physically challenged person and immobility of the elderly
person. Based on that it is easily identifiable that the solution lies with
in this theme. We are influenced by the local public transport facility
known as Bus Rapid Transits System (BRTS) available in the city
Ahmedabad. This facility is developed in such manner that it is easily
accessible by the person travelling using wheelchair as there is a
ramp outside most of the station and ample amount of the space
inside the bus. Our goal is to develop a transport vehicle or
transportation system in such manner that the people facing issue
with the mobility can travel independently without any assistance of
the relative and medical aid.
 Significance
WHY IS IT AN URGENT PROBLEM?
• As per the information available on website of World Health
Organization (WHO) globally around 16% people are physically
challenged and in India 2.2% people are physically challenged. The
second user are the elderly people (10.1% approximately of the
population of India), even if we consider around 30% of them having
problem in mobility than that number of users increases exponentially.
To understand above statement in numbers lets take example of 1000
people than 22 people are physically challenged and 10 peoples are
elders out of which around 3 are having issue in mobility. So out of
1000 people around 25 people have the problem in mobility.
• By solving this problem we are trying to give a new way or an
independent way of transportation to the people having the problem of
mobility. In terms of societal and emotional impact the solution to the
problem will give a new viewpoint towards the immobile person as now
he or she will not be relying on other person like medical aid or
relative. In term of emotional impact the solution towards this problem
will provide the immobile person a satisfaction of viewing the world by
traveling independently
Research findings
What are important findings in the research?(in mean
of transportation)
• 16% of the global population and 2.2% of the Indian population are
physically challenged.
• 10% of the Indian population are elder peoples and out of them 30%
peoples having issue in their mobility.
• Due to the issue in their mobility they have to depend on relatives or
medical aid.
• In the society, people with disability are considered as object of pity,
sympathy, isolated and rejected in the family and other social life.
• For short distance travel Physically challenged and elderly people
use human powered wheelchair and electric powered wheelchair and
for long distance travel use human powered tricycle.
• Battery operated vehicle helps in reducing greenhouse gases and air
pollution.
• In India electricity needed for charging a battery is generated by
burning fossil fuels which emits greenhouse gases and generate air
pollution. By providing Solar panel we aims to reduce the emissions.

What directions you explored and which one you finalised?
1. Provide ramp for boarding in and out of from bus and train along
with and additional space for wheelchair
2. Make train and bus station equipped with ramp so wheelchair can
easily move.
3. Make seat extension in private transportation for wheelchair.
4. Make vehicle for physically challenged and elderly people so they
can transport independently.
From above mentioned direction we identified that in first three
directions human power and other human intervention is required.
Hence we have finalized 4th direction.

To solve the problem and based direction explored we have selected
theme of sustainable mobility. The project which we have finalized is
named as “Freedom Wheels” in which we will develop either four
wheel drive or three wheel drive vehicle for physically challenged and
elderly people so they can transport independently.
