4 WEAPON TRAINING
INTRODUCTION
The Point 22 rifle is a light and simple weapon. Generally, it is used to help NCC cadets
overcome nervousness during firing. Therefore, it is important to have proper knowledge

HANDLING OF .22 RIFLE
Introduction
A good firer is one who can load and fire the rifle quickly and accurately.
This is only possible with proper training and regular practice.
Filling, Cocking & Unloading the .22 Rifle
Filling Procedure
The Point .22 Deluxe Rifle does not come with a charger.
Ammunition is filled manually into the magazine one by one.
Ensure that the ammunition is clean before loading.
Loading, Cocking & Unloading
These steps are always done on command, swiftly and in correct order.
Drill for Lying Position:
Step forward with the left foot.
Hold the rifle in the left hand.
Place the right hand on the ground and lie down with both legs spread.
Pull the bolt back and push it forward to load a round into the chamber.
Unloading:
Pull the bolt backward to eject the fired round.
LYING POSITION & CORRECT HOLDING
Purpose of Lying Position
Reduces body profile, offering better concealment on the battlefield.
Enables accurate fire while avoiding enemy sight and return fire.
Taking the Position
Stand in line with the target.
Step left and forward with the left foot while holding the rifle.
Use right hand to support yourself and lie down.
Align left elbow, right shoulder, and right foot in a straight line.
Adjust right elbow position slightly under shoulder.
Maintaining Stability
Place both palms under the chin and feel the body tension.
If tension is present, shift slightly forward/backward while maintaining elbow position.
Correct Holding (Grip)
Place the rifle in the shoulder pocket.
Position the rifle in the ‘V’ formed between the thumb and index finger of the left
hand.
Handguard rests on the palm.
All fingers wrap around the rifle, thumb inside.
Magazine should be aligned with the wrist.
Anchor the left elbow to the ground firmly.
Control the loose muscles of the right elbow and adjust:
Right hand forward if rifle points up.
Right hand backward if rifle points down.
Adjust feet if rifle aims left or right.
Correct Trigger Control & Firing
Trigger Control Technique
Use the area between the first and second joint of the index finger.
There are two stages in trigger pull:
First: Light pressure.
Second: Firm pressure to release the shot.
The barrel should not move while pressing the trigger.
Test:
ADVANCE SHOOTING
COMPETITION
The advance shooting is held at “National Rifle Association of
India”(NRAI) Target. This target has five “Bulls”. In this competition a
cadet is supposed to fire at a distance of 25 yards, but, from three
different positions.
(a) Lying Position. In this position, first of all, the cadet will fire five
bullets for “sight setting”. After this he/she will set his/her sight,
according to the bullets fired on the target. Then the cadet will again fire
five bullets, so that each bullet hits their respective bulls.
(b) Kneeling Position. In this position, the cadet will fire five bullets and
adjust his/her sight. After that, he/she will take the kneeling position and
will fire 10 bullets in such a way that each bull takes 2 bullets.
(c) Standing Position. In this position, 5 bullets are fired on the target
while standing, after the sight is adjusted, 10 bullets will be fired in such
a way that each bull gets two bullets. 13. Therefore, in “Advance
Shooting” each position requires ‘5’ bullets for “Sight Setting” and 25
bullets more for firing are made available. Each “hit” gives a mark-
AIMING
Sequence of Firing a Shot
Adopt correct position and check natural alignment.
Load the rifle, set sights, and mentally check holding points (elbows, wrists,
shoulder, grip).
Breathe normally, then align foresight tip in the center of the rear sight
aperture with POA (Point of Aim).
After taking the first trigger pressure, hold breath and recheck sight
picture.
Focus fully on foresight tip and press trigger — the shot will fire.
After firing, hold same position and check foresight movement.
Finally, exhale and call out the shot — this continuation is called Follow
Through.
AIMING AND ADJUSTMENT
Need: OF SIGHT
If it is observed during firing that despite correct aiming and technique, the bullet hits
above or below the Point of Aim (POA), then the back sight must be adjusted accordingly.
Elevation Adjustment:
The following table shows how much the Mean Point of Impact (MPI) changes when back
sight is adjusted for a different range:
Range Target Rise or Drop of MPI
200 Yards 6 inches
300 Yards 12 inches
400 Yards 18 inches
500 Yards 24 inches
• It is the duty of every firer to ensure accurate firing on the range.
Therefore, if the bullet does not hit the target, it is essential to immediately adjust
the sight so that the bullet hits the correct point on the target.
