KNOWING ONESELF

KNOWING ONESELF CAN MAKE A PERSON ACCEPT HIS/HER STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS AND DEALING
WITH OTHERS BETTER
OBJECTIVES:

1.Explain that knowing myself can make me

accept my strengths and limitations and deal
with other people better.
2.Share my unique characteristics, habits and
experiences
3.Maintain a Journal
4.Conduct self-exploration and simple disclosure
HAVE YOU EVER ASKED YOURSELF THIS QUESTION:

WHO AM I?
If you have, you are not alone.
INVENTED BY PSYCHOLOGISTS JOSEPH LUFT AND HARRY INGHAM, THE JOHARI’S
WINDOW HELP US TO UNDERSTAND SELF-AWARENESS AND THE HUMAN
INTERACTION THAT RESULTS FROM OUR PERSONAL SELF-AWARENESS. WE
ARE OFTEN UNAWARE OF HOW OTHERS PERCEIVE US, HOW WE PRESENT
OURSELVES TO OTHERS, AND EVEN HOW WELL WE KNOW OURSELVES. LUFT AND
INGHAM CREATED THIS MODEL BECAUSE THEY BELIEVED THAT WHAT HAPPENS IN
OUR LIFE DEPENDS UPON OUR OWN SELF-AWARENESS, AND THE AWARENESS
OTHERS HAVE OF US.
SELF
Is the union of
elements, namely;
body, thoughts,
feeling or emotions,
and sensations that
constitute the
individuality and
identity of a person.
It includes a person’s
life purpose, meaning
and aspirations.
 Make Up Self- your another self that is use to another “self”
or deceive someone.
 Ideal Self- it is having in its own world means, you can create or nurture
what you can be
 Actual Self - as the term implies “actual”, is your present self
that you see on the daily basis.

Self Concept- combination of the categories of

yourself and the combination of belief about one’s basic nature,
unique qualities, and typical behavior.
Feedback from Others
 Positive and negative criticisms also create an impact on self-concept. People talk about us
or how they discriminate us give an important aspect in shaping the self-concept. The
amount of criticism, feedback we sometimes freely give, helps shape the current self-
concept of what we choose to be or not.

Cultural Values/ Cultural Guidelines

 Self-concept is also indirectly influenced by cultural values. In the study of
Cultural Psychology, in this age of technology and social media, we accept our
differences, especially on how we accept the culture and beliefs of others.
BODY
Constitutes
your physical
attributes,
your health,
your posture
and poise.
THOUGHTS
The way
you think
and how
you
perceive
things
around
you.
EMOTIONS & SENSATIONS

Your experience
that prompts you to
act and behave the
way you do.
KNOWING ONESELF

To know oneself is the

first step in Personal
Development
IN PSYCHOLOGY,

Personality refers to the set of behaviors,

feelings, thoughts and motives that identifies
an individual. It is the essence of who we are
and is the embodiment of one’s physical,
psychological, cognitive, affective and spiritual
self.
PERSONALITY IS INFLUENCED BY:

NATURE NURTURE
PERSONALITY

Personality is influenced by both Nature

(heredity or genetic make-up) and Nurture
(environment). There is no single gene that
creates a trait. It is always a complex
combination of genes, environmental exposure
and experiences, and cultural backgrounds.
KNOWING ONESELF

Adolescence is the time when young people start to

ask questions about themselves, about their future,
and even about their religious and political beliefs.
During this stage of development, the young person
grapples with his or her identity thus, knowing
oneself is important.
