AIM

• Aim of this study is to check the efficiency of MBBR for dairy

wastewater treatment .

3
INTRODUCTION

 MBBR process is based on the biofilm principle using

polyethylene carrier elements.

 The carrier elements, which are less dense than water,0.93-

0.95 SG, provide a large protected surface for bacteria culture.

 MBBR provides advantages of Activated Sludge and Trickling

Filter systems without their disadvantages.

 MBBR is one of the most documented processes with many

technical publications and presentations.
4
DAIRY WASTEWATER

 Dairy wastewater contains milk solids, detergents,

sanitizers, milk wastes, and cleaning water.
 It is characterized by high concentrations of
nutrients, and organic and inorganic contents.
 Salting activities during cheese production may
result in high salinity levels.
 Wastewater may also contain acids, alkali with a
number of active ingredients, and disinfectants, as
well as a significant microbiological load,
pathogenic viruses, and bacteria.

OBJECTIVES OF STUDY
 The effect of carrier’s filling rates (FLR) on the
performance of a lab-scale MBBR in terms of
organic, BOD,COD TSS;

 The effect of organic loading rates (OLR) on the

performance of a lab-scale MBBR in terms of
organic, BOD ,COD TSS and

 The effect of hydraulic retention time (HRT) on the

performance of a lab-scale MBBR in terms of
organic, BOD,COD TSS.

8 Although this research focuses on OM,BOD,COD

SCOPE OF STUDY

• The scope of the study is to carry out a laboratory-scale study by conducting

a series of experiments using a specific MBBR to treat dairy wastewater. The
biofilm carriers used in these experiments were plastic Biofilm Chip.

• The reason that PE carrier was selected to be used in this experiment over
other media was the advantage of thin, distributed and smooth biomass
growth on their surface.

• The results were compared and evaluated in terms of dissolved organic

carbon (DOC) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency to
determine the optimal FLR, OLR and HRT.

• My dissertation work will be done by MBBR technique, In this
technique I will find that MBBR more effective
OM,TSS,BOD/COD reduction.

• MBBR is a cost-effectiveness, Uses low cost as compare to ASP

Also it is simple process.

• No problems with odors, snails or red-worms as in air phase

fixed films.

• Easier transfer of contaminants and oxygen to the biomass

and Biofilm thickness is maintained and controlled by
19 continuous sloughing created by the aeration-mixing process.
MBBR USE FOR DISSERTATION WORK

 MBBR performance and Why MBBR :

1. Self regulating biomass.

2. Flexible Design that allows for increased capacity.
