HOW TO

TELL CAROLYN
WELLS
ABOUT
AUTHOR
Carolyn Wells (1862-1942) was a prolific
American writer who made significant
contributions to several literary genres. She is
particularly recognized for her pioneering work
in detective fiction, introducing characters like
Fleming Stone, and her beloved children's
books such as "The Jingle Book" and "The Story
of Betty." Additionally, Wells was a talented
poet, known for her witty and humorous verse,
collected in works like "Idle Idyls" and "The
Nonsense Anthology." Her legacy as a versatile
and influential writer continues to be
celebrated today.
ASIAN LION
In her First stanza, she starts
with the Asian Lion that she
starts by telling her readers if
they were ever to go to Asia
and they say an animal with
tawny skin roars so fearlessly,
which may scare us to death,
then that animal is the Asian
Lion
BENGAL
TIGER
In the second stanza, the poet
describes a royal animal having black
stripes on its yellowish skin roaming
freely in the jungle. She says you will
be certain that it is a Bengal Tiger if
he starts eating you. But there is no
point in knowing the animal if you
have to die to identify him!
LEOPARD
In the third stanza, the poet
describes an animal who walks
in a slow, relaxed way, and his
body is fully covered with
small spots giving it a salt-and-
pepper appearance. If that
animal jumps on you, then you
will get to know it is a Leopard
BEAR
In the next stanza, the poet says that if you
are walking in a field and you see an animal
who hugs you very tightly, then be sure that
it is a Bear. If you still have some doubts,
then you can confirm if it hugs you again.
The poet conveys that when someone loves
you and cares for you, then they show their
feelings and emotions by giving you a tight
hug. However, when a bear hugs you in
reality, then it will kill you with his tight hug
DIFFERENCE B/W HYENA &
CROCODILE
In the fifth stanza, the poet asks the
readers if they know how to recognise
animals when they hunt their prey.
She further elaborates that when
hyenas kill their prey, they smile.
Similarly, crocodiles have tears in
their eyes when they eat their prey.
CHAMELEO
N Lastly, in the list of animals, she introduces the
Chameleon. She says that it is a lizard type creature
which doesn’t have ears and wings just like a lizard.
Only this information can help us to differentiate
between a lizard and chameleon. She further says that
the chameleon has a quality of changing its colour as
per the colour of its surrounding and surface.

Therefore, to explain this she says that if we look at the

tree and if we are seeing the tree only, then certainly it
means that there is a chameleon sitting on it. And it has
already turned its colour to brown just like the branch of
the tree.
