PCV and Esr

The document explains Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) and Packed Cell Volume (PCV), detailing how factors like the shape and number of red blood cells, plasma components, and temperature affect ESR. It highlights that ESR increases in conditions like anemia and infections, while PCV measures the volume of erythrocytes in blood and varies by gender and age. Normal values for ESR and PCV are provided, along with notes on how blood disorders can influence these measurements.

ESR AND

PCV
ESR

• It stands for Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate.

• Sedimentation is possible because of the ROULEAX
arrangement of RBC ( piling upon one another).
• The piled RBC are heavier than Individual cells.
• The rate at which the Erythrocytes sediment is called
Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate.
Factors Affecting ESR:

1. The shape and [Link] Red Blood Cells

2. Size of the ROULEAX

3. Plasma Factors
Shape and [Link] Red
Cells:
•Most Significant is the shape of cells.
•The Biconcave shape of RBC favours ROULEAX
arrangement.
•Any change in the shape may inhibit the ROULEAX
formation
•Thus ESR is less in Blood disorders like Sickel cell
anemia.
•ESR decreases in case of polycythemia and increases
in anemia ( except SCA).
• Increase in Viscosity decreases ESR.
Size of Rouleax:

• The larger the size of the ROULEAX, the faster is the

Sedimentation Rate.

•The factors which increase the size of Rouleax will

inturn favour the Rouleax formation and its size.
Plasma Factors :
• The size and number of Rouleax depends on the
fibrinogen conc. In plasma and Globulin content of
plasma.
•When fibrinogen conc increases in plasma , It
neutralizes the charges on cells . Thereby , The attractive
forces are present b/w cells . Thus, Cells come closely
together and favour the formation of Rouleax.
•ESR also increases in case of acute infections and non-
infective inflammations.
•Increased Temperature increases the ESR but decreases
the Viscosity.
• ESR also increases in case of acute infections and
non-infective inflammations.

•Increased Temperature increases the ESR but

decreases the Viscosity
• Generally, ESR increases during Pregnancy due to the
increase in Plasma Fibrinogen Content.

• ESR is more in females.

• ESR is more in newborn and infants.

• ESR increases in TB and Collagen diseases.

• ESR decreaes in polycythemia and Sickel cell anemia.

PCV
• PCV stands for Packed cell Volume.
• it's also called as Hematocrit.
• It is the fractional volume of blood that the
erythrocytes occupy.
• it's a macroscopic observation by which the %
volume of packed red blood cells is measured.
• it's also useful in finding the red cell count and their
Haemorrhage content.
• it's also useful for the Red cell Indices.
Normal Values

• Adult Male - 46% ( 40-50%)

• Adult Female - 42% ( 37-47%)
• Hematocrit decreases when red cells count decreases
and Increases when the red cell count increases.
• In caes of any blood disorder like SCA. The abnormal
values leads to false result.
