What is a Robot?
A robot is a programmable machine designed to perform tasks automatically,
either with supervision or completely autonomously.
Robots can sense their environment, process data, and act physically in
response.
Properties of Robots:
1. Sensing - Ability to gather information from the environment (e.g., cameras,
sensors).
2. Movement (Actuation) - Can move or manipulate objects using motors or
actuators.
3. Intelligence - Can process data, make decisions, and adapt to changing
environments.
4. Programmability - Robots can be programmed to perform different tasks.
5. Autonomy - Capable of working independently or with minimal human
intervention.
6.
7. Interaction - Can interact with humans or other machines (via voice, gestures,
signals, etc.).
8. Efficiency & Precision - Perform repetitive tasks accurately and consistently.
Applications of Robotics:
1. Industrial Automation
• Use: Manufacturing, assembly lines, welding, painting
• Example: Robotic arms in car factories (e.g.,
• Toyota, Tesla)
2. Healthcare
• Use: Surgery (robot-assisted), rehabilitation, elderly care, medication
delivery
• Example: Da Vinci surgical system, robotic prosthetics
3. Military and Defense
• Use: Bomb disposal, surveillance, drone operations
•
• Example: Unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs), aerial drones
4. Agriculture
• Use: Planting, watering, harvesting, crop monitoring
• Example: Drones for spraying, robotic harvesters

5. Space Exploration
• Use: Exploring planets, collecting samples
• Example: NASA's Mars rovers (Curiosity, Perseverance)
6. Domestic and Personal Use
• Use: Cleaning, security, companionship
• Example: Robot vacuum cleaners (Roomba), robot pets
•
Benefits of Robotics
1. Increased Efficiency: Robots can perform tasks faster and more accurately than
humans.
2. Improved Safety: Robots can perform tasks that are hazardous or difficult for
humans.
3. Enhanced Productivity: Robots can work around the clock without breaks.
4. Cost Savings: Robots can reduce labor costs and improve profitability.
Types of Robots
Robots are categorized based on their design and application:
1. Industrial Robots
Used in manufacturing for tasks like welding, painting, and assembly.
2. Humanoid Robots
Designed to resemble and mimic human actions and interactions.
3. Service Robots
Assist humans in daily tasks, such as cleaning or companionship.
4. Medical Robots
Aid in surgeries, rehabilitation, and patient care.
5. Military Robots
Employed for reconnaissance, bomb disposal, and combat support.
6. Agricultural Robots
Assist in farming tasks like planting, harvesting, and monitoring crops.
Robots in Everyday Life
Robots have become integral in various aspects of daily living:
•Home Automation: Robotic vacuum cleaners and lawn mowers.
•Healthcare: Robots assisting in surgeries and patient rehabilitation.
•Entertainment: Robotic toys and companions.
Future of Robotics
1. Advancements in Al: Robots will become
more intelligent and autonomous.
2. Increased Adoption: Robots will be used
in more industries and applications.
3. Improved Human-Robot Interaction:
Robots will be designed to interact more effectively with
humans.
