Matter

Matter is defined as anything that has mass and volume, classified into three states: solid, liquid, and gas. Solids have a fixed shape and volume, liquids have a fixed volume but take the shape of their container, and gases have neither fixed shape nor volume. A table summarizes the properties of each state, including shape, volume, ease of compression, diffusion rate, molecular packing, and particle attraction.

Matter
Matter
• Matter is defined as anything that has mass and
volume.
• Matter can be classified into three types depending
on their shape and properties.
• The three types of matter and known as the three
states of matter.
• They are solid, liquid and gas.
Note:volume is the amount of space occupied by matter.

Mass is the quantity of materials that a body contains.

Matter
• A solid is any substance which has a fixed shape
and volume or size.
• Example book,stone,onion,etc
• A liquid is any substance which has no fixed shape
but has a fixed volume.
• Example water,petrol,milk,soup,etc
• A gas is any substance which has no fixed shape nor
volume.
Matter
• Example air,water vapor,hydrogen gas, etc

• The next slide is a table showing a summary of the

characteristics of the three states of matter.

Volume Fixed Fixed Variable

Ease of compression Difficult to compress Difficult to compress Easy to compress

Diffusion rate Very slow Slow Rapid or very fast

Molecular packing Very close Close Spread out or wide

apart
