Donald Trump

An Outlook on his Foreign Politics

and Policies

1
Brief Introduction

+ Donald John Trump was sworn in as the 45th president of the

United States on January 20, 2017. The “Make America Great
Again” slogan is what fueled his appeal aspect to some citizens.
His lack of experience in the political realm is what he said gave
him an advantage of being a common citizen. Thought his
presidency he has made and said some questionable
statements but his strategy and policy was indeed a sort of
clear one. That America was the alpha dog of the world and
there would be no toleration otherwise for opposition.

Synopsis of the
Summit
Tensions between the USA and North Korea began to
rise as North Korea began its development of nuclear
missiles. June 12, 2018, President Donald Trump and
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met in Singapore to
discuss North Korea's nuclear program, creating a
peaceful relationship on the Korean Peninsula, and
the future of U.S. relations with North Korea During
their summit, the first-ever meeting between leaders
of the two countries, Trump and Kim issued a
brief joint statement in which Trump "committed to
provide security guarantees to the North Koreans,"
and Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering
commitment to complete denuclearization of the
Korean Peninsula.

Trump’s Perspective
+ When it comes to relations between these two
countries, the most importing thing to understand
is how these key leaders operate. In the case of
Trump, he took a more power dominant approach.
His no backdown attitudes and demands were to
make clear that he was the one in charge and not
North Korea. From his perspective, North Korea
should easily back down and respect the USA.

7
Kim Jong Un’s Perspective

+ In the mind of Kim Jong Un, he strongly felt that he

had the upper hand in regards to playing his hand.
Fear had already spread into the USA that there
were missiles capable of reaching with little to no
time to react. Kim wanted to show the American’s
that he was a top dog and would not back down
from his strong convictions. Because of this,
negations fell through.

10
Why Does It Matter?

+ From what we have gathered so far, these two

leaders have both taken a similar approach when
dealing with one another. Fighting fire with fire and
delivering verbal blows with equal amounts of
intensity. The goal was to reach a peace deal and
prevent a dictatorship from owning nuclear
weapons. Instability mixed with riled emotions can
lead to detrimental effects on both sides.
11
Trump and The
Travel Ban Plan

12
Key Terms
Ban- an official or legal
prohibition.
Visa-an endorsement on a
passport indicating that the
holder is allowed to enter,
leave, or stay for a specified
period of time in a country.
National Security- the ability of
a state to cater for the
protection and defense of its
citizenry.
13
The Travel Ban Condensed

+ Although there are many sources on what the travel ban was, the most reliable
source about what its function is from the proclamation declared by Trump.
+ Section 1. Policy and Purpose. (a) It is the policy of the United States to protect its
citizens from terrorist attacks and other public-safety threats. Screening and
vetting protocols and procedures associated with visa adjudications and other
immigration processes play a critical role in implementing that policy . . . .
+ Sec. 2. Suspension of Entry for Nationals of Countries of Identified Concern. The
entry into the United States of nationals of the following countries is hereby
suspended and limited, as follows, subject to categorical exceptions and case by-
case waivers . . . . [Chad, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Yemen,
Somalia]

14
Backlash and Ignoring the Voices

+ In 2020, the Trump administration expanded visa restrictions on six more

countries–Eritrea, Kyrgyzstan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania. But
with all these bans and restrictions there was a clear outrage by immigrants
who were already living in the USA. There were no expectations such as if
there are emergencies or family members wanting to visit.
+ Suits were filed against the travel bans resulted in court injunctions
temporarily blocking the order and groups in opposition to the ban also
blocked a second iteration of the executive order. On June 26, 2018, the
Supreme Court, in a 5-4 opinion, ultimately allowed a third version of the
executive order to go into force, which expanded the list of barred travelers .

15
Trump Ends Biden Begins
+ Biden ,as soon as he took office on January 20th 2021,
sought to undo the travel ban with his own proclamation.
+ Section 1. Revocations. Executive Order 13780, and
Proclamations 9645, 9723, and 9983 are hereby revoked.
+ Sec. 2. Resumption of Visa Processing and Clearing the
Backlog of Cases in Waiver Processing
+ Sec. 3. Review of Information-Sharing Relationships and a
Plan to Strengthen Partnerships.

16
Why was the Ban Important

+ When it boils down to these types of laws, the question must be asked if said
law serves a governmental interest. In the case of the Travel Ban and Trumps
views, national security was the biggest interest being sought by this law.
Because of this, it made it increasingly hard to argue against legally due to
national security being a long-lasting interest of the United States.
+ Trump’s goal was to target these key territories ,which were majority Muslim,
and prevent them from traveling here to reduce and contain terrorism. While
nice in theory, it also indirectly affected immigrants and citizens who were
already residing in the USA. Not more so economically but socially as they were
now being outlined and tagged with the branding of also being a terrorist and
the complete separation from their families.
