RBS Presentation

The Reverse Bleed System (RBS) is designed to prevent fuel nozzle coking by managing the thermal environment after engine shutdown. It automatically activates upon engine shutdown to blow core compartment air into the core flow path, aiming to reduce on-wing maintenance needs. The document outlines various types of coking, root causes, monitoring methods, and retrofit options for implementing the RBS in aircraft engines.

Reverse Bleed System Familiarisation Training

Reverse Bleed System (RBS) is intended to inhibit FUEL NOZZLE coking by managing fuel nozzle
thermal environment after engine shutdown… by blowing core compartment air into core flow path

RBS intent is to eliminate on-wing maintenance for coking by slowing

coking rate to point where fuel nozzles are replaced at shop visit
Coking Types
• Mains Orifice Coking
• Pilot Primary Orifice Coking
• Pilot Secondary Orifice
Coking
• Valve Coking

Main Orifice Coking

• Heavy Main Orifice (MO) coking can cause
hot streaks and turbine damage
– Routes fuel flow from blocked nozzles through
non-blocked nozzles causing higher flows and
higher temperatures
Pilot Primary Orifice Coking
• Pilot primary (PP) circuit mainly used during engine
start.
Heavy PP orifice coking can cause starting issues…no-start,
hung or hard start.
Due to low flow through nozzles surrounding ignitors
Pilot Secondary Orifice and Valve
Coking
PSEC circuit is used during engine acceleration (e.g. for
‘takeoff’ and ‘go around’). – Blocked PSEC circuit can cause
increased back pressure to the fuel pump during transients
to high power. Can cause engine stall.

• Valve systems control fuel flow. Residual fuel can coke

causing stickiness.

• Sticky valves can cause hot streaks and turbine

damage
Fuel Nozzle Coking Root Cause

ROOT CAUSE OF ALL FUEL NOZZLE COKING

TYPES IS HEAT TRANSFER FROM
STATIC/ROTATING STRUCTURES COMPONENTS
OF ENGINE AFTER ENGINE SHUTDOWN.

• Residual fuel in the nozzle is heated above

coking threshold as parts reject heat to
atmosphere. Unburnt fuel converts into coke.

• Longer time between flights increases coking

rate per cycle
Monitoring of Fuel Nozzle

Trend Monitoring Method

• Utilizes individual EGT probe temp

Turbine Borescope Inspection Method

• Repetitive turbine BSI to monitor hardware distress
Fuel Tapping from SCU PHS
Nipple (from SFH) and SCU
PB port (to FMU)
• Reverse Bleed System (RBS) is intended to
inhibit fuel nozzle coking by managing fuel
nozzle thermal environment after engine
shutdown by blowing core compartment air into
core flow path

• Electronic Engine Controls (EEC) recognize

engine shutdown & automatically activate RBS
via aircraft Engine Interface Unit (EIU) control
until next engine start, maximum of 60 mins, or
loss of electrical power

SB 72-
RBS intent is to eliminate on-wing maintenance for
0444
coking by slowing coking rate to point where fuel
nozzles are replaced at shop visit
RBS Operation
RBS activation automatic at on-ground engine shutdown when OAT > 20°F (-6.7°C) for
up to 60 mins
• RBS operational time & effectiveness dependent on main bus power on availability
duration
Other Conditions
1. Engine shut down
2. OAT > -6.7 deg C (20 deg F)
3. Fan Cowl Latch closed

Fault Dispatch
RBS health monitored by EEC via Short-term dispatch fault (Class 2, 10-day MMEL,
change in engine thermal state STS message – ‘ENG FADEC MAINTENANCE’) set
during first 5 mins after engine if insufficient cooling detected for five (5)
shutdown: consecutive activations
• If EGT decreasing, RBS is
operative • MCDU menu mode special function used to
• If EGT increasing, RBS is manually operate RBS blower; technician listens
inoperative for sound of blower running
