Henry Sy
• Henry Sy was born to a poor family in
Xiamen, China
• November 01, 1924
• He immigrated to the Philippines and
got his start by selling rejected and
overrun shoes from Tondo.
• He married Felicida Tan-Sy
• He has six children, Teresita,
Elizabeth, Henry Jr., Hans, Herbert,
and Harley.
• He developed ShoeMart (SM), one of the largest malls in the
Philippines.
• Henry Sy started his career in the Philippines working long hours in
his father's small sari-sari store. He developed a strategy to
increase sales by selling products in smaller portions. After the
store burned down during WWII, Sy sold goods on the streets and
later opened a successful shoe retail business.
• He had to overcome financial challenges, as he was not born into
wealth. Henry Sy faced several crises in his business but he
perceived them in a positive way.
• Resilience and determination to succeed despite facing various
challenges. He started from humble beginnings and built his retail
empire through hard work, vision, and a strong work ethic. His
ability to adapt to changes in the market and continuously innovate
has also contributed to his success.

chances with their money to make
the most of opportunities.

Entrepreneurship is important because it helps


create new ideas, businesses, and jobs.
Entrepreneurs bring new products and services
that make life better and solve problems. They
also help communities grow by providing work and
supporting the economy. Without entrepreneurs,
we wouldn’t have many of the things we use and
enjoy every day.
I like Henry Sy's perseverance because despite
of challenges and problems, he stay strong,
keep trying, and find solutions instead of giving
up. It’s what allows them to turn failures into
lessons and eventually achieve success.
Without perseverance, it would be hard to
overcome the challenges that come with
building a business.
