How the

Universe Works
An exploration of cosmic principles and theories.
Introduction
This presentation aims to explore the fundamental aspects of
the universe, including its origins, structures, and key theories
that define our understanding of cosmic phenomena.

01 Universe Basics
Definition and
Scope
The universe encompasses all of space, time, matter, and energy. It includes galaxies,
stars, planets, and all forms of radiation. Understanding its scope involves looking at
the observable universe, approximately 93 billion light-years in diameter, and
considering theories that describe its boundaries and properties.
The Big Bang
Theory
The Big Bang Theory posits that the universe began as a
singularity approximately 13.8 billion years ago and has
been expanding ever since. This theory explains the
observed redshift of galaxies and the cosmic microwave
background radiation as remnants of the initial explosion.
It provides a comprehensive framework for
understanding the development of cosmic structures
over time.
Expansion of
the Universe
The expansion of the universe is evidenced
by the redshift observed in the light from
distant galaxies, suggesting they are moving
away from us. This expansion is described by
Hubble's Law, which states that the velocity
at which a galaxy recedes is proportional to
its distance from us. The implications of this
expansion are profound, leading to concepts
like dark energy and influencing the ultimate
fate of the universe.
02
Cosmic Structures
Galaxies and
Stars
Galaxies are massive systems containing
billions of stars, along with gas, dust, and
dark matter. They form the essential building
blocks of the universe. Stars, which are born
from the collapse of molecular clouds under
gravity, undergo nuclear fusion processes
that produce light and heat. The lifecycle of
stars influences cosmic evolution and
contributes to the formation of heavier
elements important for planetary systems.
Planets and
Moons
Planets are celestial bodies that orbit stars,
distinguished by their ability to clear their
orbital paths of debris. They come in various
types, including terrestrial planets, which are
rocky and closer to their stars, and gas giants,
which are massive and composed primarily of
gases. Moons are natural satellites that orbit
planets, adding complexity to our understanding
of planetary systems and their formation.
Nebulas
and Black
Holes
Nebulae are vast clouds of gas and dust in
space, often serving as stellar nurseries where
new stars are born. They come in various
forms, including emission, reflection, and dark
nebulae. Black holes, formed from the
remnants of massive stars after supernova
explosions, exert such strong gravitational
forces that not even light can escape their
grasp. They play a vital role in the dynamics of
galaxies and the behavior of surrounding
matter.
Conclusions
In summary, our understanding of
the universe is continually evolving,
driven by advancements in
observational technology and
theoretical physics. Key concepts
such as the expansion of the
universe, the formation of cosmic
structures, and the behavior of
celestial bodies reinforce the
complexity and interconnectedness
of the cosmos. Ongoing research
promises to deepen our insights into
the fundamental nature of the
universe.
