Early Life
Ferdinand Magellan was born in
1480.
He was born into a Portuguese
noble family.
When he was 12, he started work as
a page (a young servant in a royal
court)
for the Queen of Portugal.
At school, he studied map-making,
astronomy and navigation. He also
loved sailing.
Early Career
In 1505, Magellan became a
sailor.
Over the next ten years, he
visited many places.
He sailed to Africa, India and
Malacca (modern-day Malaysia)
twice.
In 1513, he was wounded in a
battle in Africa. After that, he
always walked with a limp.
Early Career
At the time, people wanted spices from places like India and the
Spice Islands (modern-day Indonesia).
Countries like Spain and Portugal could make a lot of money
buying and selling these spices.
Spices
Many people wanted to buy
spices in Europe. They were
used in cooking. At that
time, spices were more
valuable than gold.

Great Voyage
Atlantic Ocean
In 1519, Magellan set sail from
Spain.
During the journey across the
Atlantic Ocean, there was a mutiny
on three of his ships. Magellan
managed to stop the mutiny before
it was too late.
Soon after, one of the ships was
destroyed in a sudden storm.
He took five ships and 270 crew
Great Voyage
Straits of Magellan
In 1520, Magellan reached the tip of South America. Suddenly,
one of the ships deserted and sailed back to Spain; there were
only three ships left.
Later that year, Magellan and his crew sailed safely into a vast
sea. He called this sea the Pacific Ocean.
This place – where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Pacific Ocean –
would one day be known as the Straits of Magellan.
Animals
Magellan and his crew were the first
Europeans to see llamas, alpacas and
penguins.
Great Voyage
Pacific Ocean
The journey took a long time and
many sailors died of either
starvation or scurvy (lack of V-
C).
They stayed for a short time in
Guam before sailing to the
Philippines. While he was there,
Magellan became involved in a
local war.
On 27th April 1521, Magellan was
shot after he was involved in a
fight with two chieftains in the
Philippines.

The Journey Home
A former mutineer called Juan Sebastian Elcano became the
new leader. He set sail for Spain.
On the way home, they stopped to trade goods but also lost two
more ships – only one ship remained.
The journey home was very difficult.
Some crew died and the rest only
had rice to eat. In 1522, Elcano and
the survivors arrived home in Spain.
Out of 270 crew, only 18 made it
home.
How Is Ferdinand
Magellan Remembered
today?
