Sustainable And Future

Technologies
Green
Technologies
Green technologies broadly encompass innovations
focused on environmental enhancement and resource
efficiency. They range from renewable energy solutions,
like solar and wind power, to advanced waste
management solutions and eco-friendly materials.
Central to their design is a commitment to sustainability,
aiming to minimize ecological footprints, conserve
resources, and promote energy efficiency. These
technologies are crucial in addressing global
environmental challenges such as climate change and
resource scarcity, marking a significant shift from
traditional practices to sustainable alternatives.
Green technologies also embody a transformative
approach to business and economics. They offer new
opportunities for growth and development, challenging
traditional business models and promoting sustainable
business operations.
What are the 4
pillars of green
technology?

1. Energy efficiency:
Green technology priorities
reducing energy consumption and
enhancing efficiency in operations,
systems, and processes. This
includes innovations like energy-
efficient appliances, smart grids,
LED lighting, and improved
insulation techniques to lower
energy waste and emissions.
2. Renewable energy:
The shift from fossil fuels to clean,
renewable energy sources is a
cornerstone of green technology.
Technologies that harness solar, wind,
hydroelectric, geothermal, and biomass
energy help meet global energy
demands sustainably, reducing
greenhouse gas emissions and reliance
on finite resources.
3. Waste reduction and management:
This pillar minimizes waste generation
through recycling, reusing, and adopting
circular economy models. Technologies
that convert waste into valuable
resources (e.g., waste-to-energy
systems) and innovations in sustainable
packaging aim to reduce landfill burden
and environmental impact.
4. Sustainable design and
innovation:
Green technology involves designing
products, infrastructure, and systems
that minimize environmental harm.
This includes using eco-friendly
materials, promoting biodegradable
products, and creating technologies
that integrate seamlessly with
nature. Sustainable design focuses
on longevity, resource optimization,
and reducing environmental
footprints.
Is Green Building Technology Necessary?
With over 8.062 billion (2023) people living in the
World, the growing population is driving up the
demand for energy and living space. This can lead to
more non-renewable energy use and greater
environmental harm.
As a construction business owner, adopting green
building technologies allows you to provide your
clients with forward-thinking, eco-friendly solutions.
Green building construction is the ideal answer to the
unsustainable growth projected for the country and
the construction industry.
So, transform your construction business to:
• Protect clients' health
• Boost employee productivity
• Lower your carbon footprint
• Reduce environmental impact
• Improve indoor air quality
• Conserve and reduce water, energy, and other rapidly
What Are the Costs of Green Building
Construction?

Data shows that over 60% of people think green building processes and practices cost
more than conventional buildings. However, a study by the World Business Council for
Sustainable Development reveals that these costs are often overestimated.

Participants in the study believed the upfront cost of a green building to be 17% higher
than that of a traditional building.

However, the US Green Building Council states that the initial cost of a green building
is only 2–3% higher than that of a non-green building.

The total value comes to around $3.00-$5.00 per square foot, which isn't significantly
more expensive than traditional buildings.

PASSIVE DESIGN
Passive design is an approach to building
design that maximizes the use of natural
resources, such as sunlight, wind, and
the earth’s natural thermal properties,
to regulate a building's temperature,
lighting, and ventilation. Good passive
design should reduce or eliminate the
need for additional heating or cooling
depending on your location and often
relies on an active occupant to work
properly. A passively designed home can
deliver a lifetime of thermal comfort,
low energy bills, and low greenhouse gas
emissions.
Design for climate
Australia has 8 main climate zones (as
specified by the National Construction
Code), and it is important to make sure
your home is designed to suit your climate
zone. Different passive design strategies
suit different climates.
Passive heating

Passive solar heating lets in winter sun and

ensures that the building envelope keeps heat
inside. It must be matched by careful design and
management of summer heat in many climates.

Passive cooling

Passive cooling techniques cool both the house

and the people in it, using elements such as air
movement, evaporative cooling and thermal
mass.
Thermal mass

Thermal mass is the ability of a material to

absorb and store heat energy. Appropriate use of
thermal mass in your home can save significantly
on heating and cooling costs.

Insulation

Insulation acts as a barrier to heat flow and is

essential for keeping your home warm in winter
and cool in summer. Some types of insulation
can also help with weatherproofing and
soundproofing.
Glazing

Glazed windows and doors have a significant

effect on your home’s thermal performance – up
to 40% of a home’s heating energy can be lost
and up to 87% gained through glazing. Choose
the right glazing for your climate and orientation.

Shading

Appropriate shading — which can include eaves,

awnings, shutters, and plantings — can maximize
thermal comfort by allowing in winter sun but
blocking summer rays. The most appropriate
strategy will differ with climate and orientation.
Skylights and roof windows

Skylights are a good source of natural

light, and careful choice and placement
can minimize any contribution to glare
or heat gain.

Ventilation and airtightness

Ventilation with fresh air is essential for

a healthy home, but it should be
controlled rather than through
unwanted air leaks. Sealing your home
is one of the simplest upgrades you
can make to increase your comfort and
reduce energy costs.
