ENVIRONMENTA

L POLLUTION
BY:PETER EGUAOJE, OYINKANSOLA ADEYEMI, FIKAYOMI ADESEYOJU,
EMMANUELLA MBACHU AND MOSOPE OLAYINKA.
OBJECTIVES
• 1.Define environmental pollution.
• 2.Categorize the types of environmental pollution.
• 3.List the effects of environmental pollution.
• 4.List the preventive measures on environmental pollution.
WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL
POLLUTION?

Environmental pollution is the release of harmful substances into the air,

water, or land, causing damage to nature and health.
It is mostly caused by human activities.
TYPES OF
ENVIRONMENTAL
POLLUTION
• 1.AIR POLLUTION
• AIR REFERS TO THE MIXTURE OF GASES IN
THE ATMOSPHERE. WHEN AIR IS POLLUTED,
IT CAN BE A SERIOUS ENVIRONMENTAL
HEALTH POLLUTION. AIR POLLUTION CAN BE
IN CHEMICAL OR BIOLOGICAL FORM.
SOURCES OF AIR POLLUTION
•1.Industrial Sources:
•Factories
•Power plants
•Chemical production
•2.Natural Sources:
•Wildfires
•Volcanic eruptions
•Dust storms
•3.Transport Sources:
•Cars
•Trucks
•Buses
WATER POLLUTION
Water can be polluted directly when it is surface
water, or indirectly when the pollutants sink into the
ground to pollute underground water.
Water pollution occurs when harmful substances like
chemicals, sewage, and plastic contaminate water
bodies, making it unsafe for humans and wildlife. It
comes from sources like factories, farms, and waste
disposal.
CONTROL OF AIR POLLUTION
•Switch to clean energy
•Reduce vehicle emissions
•Install industrial air filters
•Plant trees
•Recycle waste properly
•Reducing the sulphur content in fuel.
•Setting air quality criteria before giving licenses to
industries.
SOURCES OF WATER POLLUTION
Disease causing organisms
Sewage
Fertilizers
Industrial waste
Pesticides/insecticide
Refuse
Fuel
EFFECTS OF WATER POLLLUTION
The following diseases are some of the effects of water pollution.
Dysentry
Typhoid fever
Guinea worm
Cholera
Worm infection
Skin problems
CONTROL OF WATER POLLUTION
Protecting the source of water
Boiling
Filtration
Treating with chemicals
Storage, thereby allowing impurities to settle
Processing in water treatment plants
LAND POLLUTION
Land pollution is the introduction of
contaminants into the environment which are
injurious to humans, animals and plants.
Land pollution degrades soil quality. Land
pollution happens when harmful substances,
such as waste, chemicals, and plastics,
contaminate the land. It comes from improper
waste disposal, industrial activities, and
excessive use of pesticides. This harms
ecosystems, pollutes soil, and affects plant and
animal life.
SOURCES OF LAND POLLUTION
Oil spillage
Pesticide and insecticide
Fertilizers
Industrial waste
Refuse
EFFECTS OF LAND POLLUTION
Destruction of plants.
Pollution of surface water.
Destruction of marine line.
Putting human health in danger.
CONTROL OF LAND
POLLUTION
Legislation
Reduction in the use of fertilizers
Practice of mixed farming to improve soil quality
NOISE POLLUTION

Noise is unwanted sound. Noise can be

created through mechanical, electrical or
other man made devices and transmitted
through the air.
The unit of measuring sound is decibel.
Noise pollution is unwanted or harmful
sound from sources like traffic, factories,
and construction. It can cause health
problems like stress and hearing loss.
SOURCES OF NOISE

Loud conversation or discussion among people.

Engines.
Sea waves.
War sounds.
Record sellers and mobile sellers.
Thunder.
EFFECTS OF NOISE POLLUTION
It can interfere with sleep
It can cause deafness
It is associated with stress relate diseases like hypertension
It can make the person being disturbed behave abnormally
