Oedipus Complex

Oedipus, the king of Thebes in Greek mythology, unknowingly killed his father Laius and married his mother Jocasta, leading to tragic consequences. The Oedipus complex, introduced by Sigmund Freud, describes a child's unconscious desire for the opposite-sex parent and rivalry with the same-sex parent, typically arising between ages 3-6. This internal conflict is resolved through identification with the same-sex parent and redirecting affection towards others.

Oedipus

Complex

Who Is Oedipus?
Oedipus, in
Greek mythology, the
king of Thebes who
unwittingly killed his
father and married his
mother.
What is Oedipus’s Story ?
Laius, king of Thebes, was warned by an oracle that his son
would slay him. Accordingly, when his wife, Jocasta, bore a
son, he had the baby exposed on Cithaeron. (Tradition has it
that his name, which means “Swollen-Foot,” was a result of
his feet having been pinned together, but modern scholars are
skeptical of that etymology.) A shepherd took pity on the
infant, who was adopted by King Polybus of Corinth and his
wife and was brought up as their son. In early manhood,
Oedipus visited Delphi and encountered Laius on a road and
killed him after a heated argument.
What is Oedipus’s Story ?
Continuing on his way, Oedipus found Thebes plagued by the
Sphinx, who put a riddle to all passersby and destroyed those
who could not answer. Oedipus solved the riddle, and the
Sphinx killed herself. In reward, he received the throne of
Thebes and the hand of the widowed queen, his mother,
Jocasta. They had four children: Eteocles, Polyneices,
Antigone, and Ismene. Later, when the truth became known,
Jocasta committed suicide, and Oedipus (according to another
version), after blinding himself, went into exile, accompanied
by Antigone and Ismene, leaving his brother-in-law Creon as
regent. Oedipus died at Colonus near Athens, where he was
swallowed into the earth and became a guardian hero of the
What is the Oedipus Complex
The Oedipus complex is?a
concept introduced by Sigmund
Freud, rooted in his theory of
psychosexual development. It
refers to a child's unconscious
desire for the opposite-sex parent
and jealousy or rivalry toward the
same-sex parent. Freud suggested
that this complex typically arises
during the ages between 3-6, when
children become more aware of
their bodies and begin to form
more intense feelings toward their
parents.
What are it’s causes ?
The cause of the Oedipus complex, according to Freud, is
tied to the child's developing sexual identity and feelings of
desire toward the opposite-sex parent. The boy begins to feel
sexual attraction toward his mother, while seeing his father as
a rival for her affection. He may also experience fear and
jealousy of his father, fearing punishment for these feelings
(which Freud called "castration anxiety"). To resolve this
internal conflict, the boy begins to identify with his father,
internalizing masculine traits, and eventually, he learns to
redirect his affection toward other people, eventually letting go
of the desire for his mother.
