Lenses

Understanding Convex & Concave

Lenses
Physics - Grade 11
Lesson Objectives
• - Differentiate between convex and concave
lenses.
• - Describe image characteristics formed by
lenses.
• - Use the lens formula to calculate image
position.
• - Recognize applications of lenses.
Introduction
• Have you ever used a magnifying glass?
• Why do we use lenses in glasses or cameras?
• Let’s explore how lenses work!
Types of Lenses
• 1. Convex Lens (Converging): bends light
inward.
• 2. Concave Lens (Diverging): bends light
outward.
Key Lens Terminology
• - Optical Center
• - Principal Axis
• - Focal Point (F)
• - Focal Length (f)
Ray Diagram: Convex Lens
• Object placed beyond 2F:
• - Image is real, inverted, smaller.
• (Ray diagram shown next slide)
Insert Convex Lens Ray Diagram Here
Ray Diagram: Concave Lens
• Object placed in front:
• - Image is virtual, upright, smaller.
• (Ray diagram shown next slide)
Insert Concave Lens Ray Diagram Here
Lens Formula
• \[ 1/f = 1/d_o + 1/d_i \]
• f = focal length
• d_o = object distance
• d_i = image distance
Applications of Lenses
• - Eyeglasses
• - Cameras
• - Microscopes
• - Telescopes
Quick Review
• 1. What type of image is formed by a convex
lens beyond 2F?
• 2. What does a concave lens do to light?
• 3. Define focal length.
