What is ‘Climate Change’?
● Climate change refers to long-term shifts in
temperatures and weather patterns.
● Climate change won't just impact forest,
trees, or animals – it will affect all of us.
● From more extreme weather to increasing
food prices, to recreation and decreased
opportunities to appreciate the natural
world, people everywhere will feel its
effects.
Causes of climate change
● Each year approximately 12 million
hectares of forest are destroyed.
● 24 % of direct carbon dioxide (CO₂)
emissions due to the burning of fossil
fuel
● Cities consume 78 % of the world's
energy and produce more than 60 % of
greenhouse gas emissions.
Effects of climate change
● Rising temperatures: The rate of warming since
1981 is more than twice that: 0.18° C per decade
● Rising sea levels: As the ocean warms, its volume
increases since water expands as it gets warmer.
● Increased drought: Global warming aggravate water
shortages in already water-stressed regions.
● Loss of wildlife and biodiversity: The world is
losing species at a rate 1,000 times greater than at
any other time in recorded human history.
The Connection between Climate Change and Ethics
● Climate ethics addresses the responsibilities individuals owe to our earth
systems while also considering mitigations already in place.
● The effects become more drastic as time moves on, sparking serious
concerns as the world inches closer to irreversible damage.
● Ethicists are looking into ways that third world countries can reduce their
carbon emissions that are causing pollution.
● Ethicists have also faced issues with distributive justice as they find a way
to fairly share the benefits and burdens of climate change policies.
Local Perspective : INDIA
● Extreme Heat: The west coast and southern India are projected to shift to
new, high-temperature climatic regimes.
● Changing Rainfall Patterns: A 2°C rise in the world’s avg. temperatures
will make India’s summer monsoon highly unpredictable.
● Droughts: In 1987 and 2002-2003, droughts affected more than half of
India’s crop area and led to a huge fall in crop production
● Groundwater: 15% of India’s groundwater resources are overexploited.
● Glacier Melt: At 2.5°C warming, melting glaciers and the loss of snow
cover over the Himalayas
The Local Perspective: The India against Climate Change
● National Action Plan on Climate Change: outlines existing and future policies and programs
addressing climate mitigation and adaptation.
● National Clean Energy Fund:The Government of India created the (NCEF) in 2010 for financing and
promoting clean energy initiatives and funding research in the area of clean energy in the country.
● International Solar Alliance: ISA was launched at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in
Paris on 30 November 2015.
● Bharat Stage (BS) Emission Norms: Emissions from vehicles are one of the top contributors to air
pollution.
● Paris Agreement: India’s greenhouse gas emission intensity of its GDP will be reduced by 33-35%
Global Perspective - Australia
● Australia has experienced an increase of over 1.4 °C in average
annual temperatures
● Rainfall in southwestern Australia has decreased by 10–20% since
the 1970s
● These immensely affects Australia’s environment, economy and
public health.
Cause of climate change in australia
● Electricity generation is the main cause of carbon pollution in
Australia as 73% of our electricity comes from burning coal and
13% from burning gas.
● Australian farming contributes 16% of our total greenhouse gas
emissions.
● Electricity is responsible for about 34% of our climate-changing
greenhouse gases.
Australia against the climate change
● Australia is one of the world's biggest per capita
greenhouse gas emitters.
● Australia set a target for 2030 of making a 26-28%
reduction in its emissions compared with 2005
levels.
● The Climate Change Performance Index ranked
Global perspectives- The United States
● United States has led to the country warming by 2.6
°F (1.4 °C) since 1970.
● The united states produced 5.2 billion metric tons of
CO2 equivalent emissions in 2020.
● As of 30 June 2021 61% of continental USA were in
GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE-UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
Here are a few key ways that it is affecting us:
● Inequality- Low-income communities and communities of color are more likely to live in flood-prone areas or
near polluting industries.
● Responsibility- Reducing its own emissions and helping to support efforts in other countries to transition to
low-carbon economies.
● Biodiversity-Climate change is causing species extinction and altering ecosystem
● Global Cooperation- US help support less developed countries in their efforts to reduce emissions and adapt
to the impacts of climate change.
● Intergenerational justice-Climate change is a long-term problem that will affect future generations, who will
inherit a world with more extreme weather, rising sea levels, and other impacts.
UNITED STATES OF AMERICA AGAINST CLIMATE CHANGE
● Established ambitious goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions-at least a 26-28% reduction in greenhouse gas
emissions below 2005 levels by 2025
● Signed legislation that ramps up renewable energy-Nevada passed a bill to increase the amount of electricity it gets
from renewable sources to 50% by 2030.
● Pushed for better energy efficiency-Homes and commercial buildings account for 40% of total energy use in the U.S.
● Accelerated policies for Zero Emission Vehicles- Require auto manufacturers to make electric vehicles 5% of their
vehicles for sale in Colorado by 2023.
● Proposed regulations to cut harmful air pollutants-In 2019, Virginia announced plans to limit methane leaks from
natural gas infrastructure and landfills.
IS IT HOPELESS TO STOP CLIMATE CHANGE?
● Be More Conservative with Energy Usage:
● Educating others about climate change cannot be overstated in
our modern society.
● Focusing your efforts to spread awareness about renewable
energy is the best way to create a positive impact in your
community.
● Recycling is a cost-effective and eco-friendly process that
eliminates waste and doesn’t emit greenhouse gasses into the
environment.
WHY DO WE NEED TO PROTECT THE CLIMATE?
● Stability of our planet and the well-being of
human and non-human life.
● Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and limit
global warming,
● Ensure a sustainable and livable planet for
Proposed Solution
● An effective solution to the problem is international action and cooperation to reduce the
factors affecting Climate change.
● Along with this, countries must enact domestic policies and regulation such as “Haritha
Haram” and ‘Ban on plastic’ to be strictly adhered to, as well as embassies that regulate and
respect a country’s current state.
● Implementing rules and regulations will hold industries, firms, and organizations
accountable for their actions as they will have to account for every damage they do because
of their innovation.
Local Implementation of Proposed Solution
● Locally in India, the country would have to enact more specific
Policies, awareness programs, and follow rules set by the local government.
● Brining an awareness on present issues and future needs, would awake the young
minds to keep a sustainable environment.
● Organizations dedicated to helping and regulating strategies to protect and
planting plants, increasing the Fauna and flora would bring a healthy society.
