Introduction

• Human beings are incessantly making efforts for his survival from the ancient ages.
He is making all kinds of efforts to acquire the second basic need i.e., SHELTER.
• As parts of these efforts construction of residential houses and other constructions are
made by him.
• As for Residential Vasthu is concerned we first need to understand 4 divisions of it.
• Bhumi : Land/ Plot/ Site
• Prasada : Palace/ Houses
• Yana : Chariots, Vehicles, Vimanas, Ships etc.
• Sayana : Furnitures – chairs, cots, sofasets etc.

Bhoomi

• Among the four division of Residential vasthu , Bhoomi – Land/ plot/ Site is
considered as the most dependable thing for the construction of a house.
• If we are able to identify the suitable plot for construction then maximum benefits can
be acquired and Major doshas can be avoided.
• To Examine the Plot for suitability various methods have been discussed under
Bhushodana or Bhoomi Pareekshe.

• There are Six methods in ancient classics that are mentioned for soil testing
• Density Test
• Moisture Test
• Fertility Test
• Airflow Test
• Radiation Test
• Colour Test

• These test are simple and can be applied to any kind of soil

Bhoomi Pareekshe

Density Test:
This is used to test whether the soil is denser or looser.
• Clean the test area and dig a cubic pit of one feet.
• Refill the pit with same mud /soil.
• If the pit left with excess mud after completely filled
means soil has good density and best for construction. 1x1x1
• If the soil gets filled completely and no excess left means land has medium density
and moderate for construction.
• If some part of the pit still remains unfilled and no soil is left. It indicates low
density and such lands are considered inauspicious for construction. 8
Bhoomi Pareekshe

Moisture Test:
This is used to test whether the soil is moist or dry.
• Clean the test area and dig a cubic pit of one feet.
• Fill the pit with clean water fully.
• Walk 100 steps away and return back to pit.
• If the pit remains fully filled it is considered auspicious. 1x1x1
• If the pit is partially filled with water is considered as moderately auspicious for
construction.
• If the pit is completely empty or no water remaining is considered bad.

Fertility Test:
This is used to test whether the soil is Fertile for vegetation.
• Few seeds of grains are sown in the soil and their sprouting time is studied.
• If it sprouts in 3 nights then the land is auspicious.
• If it sprouts in 5 nights then it is moderately auspicious and can be used for living.
• If the sprouts doesn’t happen in 7 or more nights, then the land is unsuitable for
living.
• Fertility is important for greenery in the surroundings.

Wind Test:
• Take the soil from the land and throw it up in the air.
• If it floats in air then it is a good sign.
• If it falls down instantly the it is not considered good.
• If some soil floats and some fall down it is considered medium.
• If the entire soil goes up then it is considered the best.

Lamp/ Radiation Test:


This test is done to identify to which varna that land is suitable.
• Clean the test area at the center of the plot and dig a cubic pit of one feet.
• Light the lamp in the cardinal direction of the pit.
• Observe which lamp glows for the longest duration.
• North – Priest, East – warrior, South- Trading
West - Serving

Colour Test:
This test is done to identify to which varna that land is suitable.
• The land can be divide into 4 colours. They are white, red , green and Black.
• Educational authorities will be benefited by dwelling in white/ light yellow coloured
land.
• Royal/ warrior class can dwell in red colour site.
• Business people dwell in Green colour site.
• Industrious/ Hard Labour people use brown/Black coloured site.
• Multi coloured and sites having soot/ smoke coloured are not suitable for construction.
Similarly hard surfaced, sites which are too hot or too cold are not suitable for
dwelling. 13
