Why Pray?

What is the point of prayer when God knows

the future and is already in control of
everything? If we cant change God’s mind
then why pray?
What’s your concept of
prayer?
Common Misconceptions
•"Prayer doesn't make sense; if God knows everything, why do I
have to ask?“

Matt 6:10 “you kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven”

• "Prayeris only to be used as a last resort, after you have done

everything else you possibly can.“

1 Timothy 2:1–4

“I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving
be made for all people for kings and all those in authority, that we may live
peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and
pleases God our Savior,4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a
knowledge of the truth.”

Mark 1:35

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house
and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.

•"I must feel something when I pray in
order for my prayers to be answered. I
must feel like I'm full of faith.“

“Prayer is a duty commanded by God not a

glandular feeling”

• "I can't pray, I don't know what to say.“

Ephesians 8:16 “And pray in the Spirit on all

occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.
With this in mind, be alert and always keep on
praying for all the Lord’s people.”
•"I don't pray because I don't want to bother God
with my needs.“

Matthew 7:7-11 “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and

you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For
everyone who asks receives; the one who seeks finds; and to
the one who knocks, the door will be opened. “Which of you,
if your son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he
asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though
you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children,
how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to
those who ask him!

• "I can't pray because I haven't been doing right

lately.“

1 John 1:9 “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just

and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness”
•"I must feel like praying in order to pray
effectively. I need to be in the mood or
inspired.“

Ephesians 6:18 “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions

with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in
mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the
Lord’s people.”
So What’s a prayer???
Prayer is the practice of the presence of God.
It is the place where pride is abandoned,
hope is lifted, and supplication is made.
Prayer is the place of admitting our need, of
adopting humility, and claiming dependence
upon God. Prayer is the needful practice of
the Christian. Prayer is the exercise of faith
and hope. Prayer is the privilege of touching
the heart of the Father through the Son of
God, Jesus our Lord.
