The Decalogue

Then God spoke all these words:


I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of
slavery. You shall not have other gods beside me
You shall not invoke the name of the Lord, your God, in vain.
Remember the Sabbath day—keep it holy
Honor your father and your mother.
You shall not kill.[i]
You shall not commit adultery.
You shall not steal.
You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.

Many times in the history of salvation, humanity
forget again and again that they created in the
Image and Likeness of God and they commit sins.

Each time they forget and they live only for


themselves, THEY ARE NOT HAPPY.
God saw this sadness of man and so
to help and guide them in regaining
this happiness and peace in their
mind, heart and soul, he gave the
10 COMMANDMENTS to His people.

are a summary of
the conditions of a
life freed from the
slavery of sin.

follows the division used by St. Augustine

1. “I am the Lord your God. You shall not have other


gods besides me.”
2. “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God
in vain.”
3. “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day.”
4. “Honor your father and your mother.”
5. “You shall not kill.”
6. “You shall not commit adultery.”
7. “You shall not steal.”
8. “You shall not bear false witness against your
neighbor”.
9. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife.”
10.“You shall not covet your neighbor’s goods.”

Commandments
The first commandment: “I am the Lord your
God. You shall not have other gods besides me.”

Prohibitions: idolatry, modern idolatry,


superstition, divination, tempting God, sacrilege,
simony, atheism, graven images
The second commandment: “You shall not
take the name of the Lord your God in
vain.”

Prohibitions: Blasphemy – speaking ill of


God, in failing in respect toward him in
one’s
speech, in misusing God’s name.
cursing, profanity, false oath,

The third commandment: “Remember to keep
holy the Sabbath day.”

Prohibition: Missing Mass on Sundays and holy


days of obligation through neglect or
laziness.
The fourth commandment: “Honor your
father and your mother.”

Prohibition: Being disrespectful to our parents


and the elderly and our neglect to assist
them in their spiritual and temporal needs.
The fifth commandment: “You shall not kill.”
And the eight commandment: “You shall not
bear false witness against your neighbor”.

Prohibitions: *murder, suicide, euthanasia,


abortion, artificial contraception, death
penalty, war, hatred
*gossip, backbiting, slander, rash judgment
The sixth commandment: “You shall not
commit adultery.”
And the ninth commandment: “You shall not
covet your neighbor’s wife.”

Prohibitions: *impure thoughts, words an actions: lust,


masturbation, pornography, fornication, prostitution, rape
*Extramarital relationship, divorce, polygamy
The seventh commandment: “You shall not
steal.”
And the tenth commandment: “You shall not
covet your neighbor’s goods.”

Prohibitions: *borrowing without returning and


paying
*destroying the possessions of others
*thinking to willfully take and destroy the
properties of others
*Graft and corruption
“Man is born free but
everywhere is in chains.”
