CATTLE FARMING FOR MILK

• Milk producing females are called milch animals.

• Milk production depends on lactation period (period of milk
production after the birth of a calf. Milk production can be
increased by increasing lactation period.
• Foreign breeds (for long lactation periods) are bred with local
breeds (for excellent resistance to diseases) to get animals with
desired qualities.
5

MAINTAINENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Proper cleaning and shelter facilities are required for

humane farming and production of clean milk.
• Animals require regular brushing to remove dirt and loose
hair.
• They should be sheltered under well-ventilated roofed
sheds that protect them from rain.
• The floor must be sloped to stay dry and make cleaning
easier.
6

FOOD REQUIREMENTS

• Roughage: largely in fibre.

• Concentrates: contain high levels of protein and other
nutrients.
• Cattle need balanced rations containing all nutrients in
proportionate amounts.
• Certain food additives containing micronutrients promote
the health and milk output of dairy animals.
7

PROTECTION FROM DISEASES

• Diseases reduce milk production and cause death.

• External parasites live on the skin and mainly cause skin
diseases.
• Internal parasites like worms affect the stomach, intestine
and liver.
• Diseases are also cause by bacteria and virus
• Vaccinations are given to animals for many major viral and
bacterial diseases.
