Classifying Angiosperms

Angiosperms are flowering plants classified into two groups: monocotyledons with one cotyledon and dicotyledons with two. Monocotyledons, such as grasses and onions, have flower parts in threes and narrow leaves with parallel veins, while dicotyledons, like beans and tomatoes, have flower parts in fours or fives and broader leaves with branching veins. The document outlines the key characteristics and examples of each group.

MONOCOTYLEDONS
AND
DICOTYLEDONS

Angiosperms are flowering plants that

produce seeds.
Angiosperms are divided into two groups
based on the number of cotyledons they
have in their seeds.
A cotyledon is the part of the seed that
stores food or nutrients for the embryo.
The embryo is what will grow into a plant
in the right conditions

MONOCOTYLEDONS AND DICOTYLEDONS 2

Dicot
Dicotyledons are plants that have two
cotyledons.
Examples of plants that are dicotyledons
are: beans, tomatoes, acacia trees and
proteas.
Dicotyledons have the following things in
common:
The parts of the flower are arranged in
fours or fives or multiples of four or five.
The plants have different shaped leaves
with veins in a branch-like pattern.
The leaves are attached to the main
stem with a shorter stem called a
petiole.
The stem starts off soft and green but
gets hard and woody as the plant gets
older.
