Conductometry Prelab

The document presents an overview of electrochemical analysis, specifically focusing on conductometry, which measures the electrical properties of solutions for quantitative and qualitative analysis. It discusses the principles of conductance, mobility of electrolytes, and applications such as conductometric titration for acid-base reactions. Additionally, it includes examples and problems related to calculating electrolyte mobility and determining endpoints in titrations.

ELECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS
 Definition:
physicochemical methods of analysis that depend on
measuring electrical property of a solution of
substance for either quantitative or qualitative
analysis.
 can be used:
1- For colored and turbid solutions.
2- For very diluted solutions.
3- Where there is no suitable Indicator.
 Clasification of electrochemical methods:

Coductometry Potentiometry
Electrogravimetry
CODUCTOMETRY
 Conductometry: is an electrochemical method of
analysis w’ depends on the ability of the electrolyte to
conduct the electric current through the movement
of its ions between two electrodes carrying the
electric current (no redox reaction, i.e. no
electron transfer).
 Conductance (G): is the ability of electrolyte to
conduct the electric current through the movement of
ions in the electrical field.
CODUCTANCE CELL

 NB. Not all substances have the

same conductance.
 ↓ size ↑ conductance (G)
 ↑ charge ↑ conductance (G)
MOBILITY OF ELECTROLYTE
 It is referred to (λ ∞).

 itis characteristic for each

substance.

 According to Kohlrausch law, the

mobility of electrolyte (λ ∞ ) can be
calculated from the following
equation:
λ ∞ =∑ λ ∞- + λ ∞+
 Problem (1):
Calculate the mobility of (CH3COOH)
λ for CH3COONa= 90, for HCl= 425 and
for NaCl= 125.
 Answer:

 λ of CH COOH
3
=(λ of CH3COONa + λ of HCl) - λ of NaCl
= (90 + 425) – 125 = 390

 Problem (2):
Calculate the mobility of (CH3COOK)
λ for CH3COOH= 390, for HBr = 428 and
for KBr = 152.
APPLICATIONS OF
CONDUCTOMETRY
 Conductometric titration:
it involves measurement of the
conductance after successive addition
of the titrant.

 The end point is obtained from a plot

of conductance (G) against mLs of
titrant.

 It can be used for acid-base titration.

ACID-BASE TITRATION
1) If strong acid against strong base (e.g. HCl
# NaOH), the e.p can be determined by the
following graph:
2) If weak acid against strong base (e.g.
CH3COOH # NaOH), the e.p can be
determined by the following graph:
3) If mixture of strong acid and weak acid against
strong base (e.g. HCl / CH3COOH # NaOH), the
e.p can be determined by the following graph:
