• 31 October 1896. Emilio
Aguinaldo, of the Magdalo faction,
proposed the formation of a
republican government and the
organization of a regular army
• 22 March 1897. The Magdalo and
Magdiwang factions met and
decided to dissolve the Katipunan
and established a republic
complete with an Army. Artemio
Ricarte was elected as the
commanding general. This event at
Tejeros is credited as the
anniversary day and by inference,
the genesis of the Philippine Army

AFP Brief History


• 23 June 1898. Emilio Aguinaldo
created a revolutionary
government and the Army of
Liberation of the Philippines. This
army was placed under the
Department of War and Public
Works. Under the Department of
Foreign Affairs was the Navy. This
is the anniversary of today’s
Philippine Navy.
• February 1901. US Congress
authorized enlistment of Filipino
into the US Army. This formally
established the Philippine Scouts
as a unit of the US Army.

• 08 August 1901. The Philippine
Constabulary is activated and
organized under Act 175 for the
purposes of better maintaining
peace, law and order in the various
provinces of the Philippine Islands.
• 21 December 1935. Commonwealth
Act No. 1 or more referred to as the
National Defense Act is signed into
law by Quezon. This date is
considered the anniversary of the
Armed Forces of the Philippines.

• 01 July 1947. A small contingent of aircrafts
acquired from the United States is flown in
by Filipino pilots. This date is considered the
anniversary of the Philippine Air Force
• 02 Nov 1950. Establishment of Philippine
Marine Corps
• 23 December 1950. President Quirino issues
Executive Order No. 389 creating the Armed
Forces of the Philippines and dropping the
name National Defense Forces. The four
major services are created, namely:
Philippine Army, Philippine Constabulary,
Philippine Air Force and the Philippine Navy

AFP Brief History


• March 1983. Pres Marcos directs the
restructuring of the AFP resulting to the
organization of the Regional Unified
Commands, Their boundaries conforming to
the political sub-divisions of the 12 regions.
Major Services also organized specialized
forces, PA created the FSRR; PC organized the
SAF; PAF the Aviation Security Group; and
under the Navy, the Marines were
strengthened.
• 13 December 1990. RA 6975 was signed into
law establishing the Philippine National
Police, separating the PC/INP its nucleus,
from the AFP and putting it under the
Department of Interior and Local
Government.

 Provide the base for expansion of the AFP


 Assist in relief and rescue during disaster or calamities
 Assist in socio-economic development and
 Assist in the operations and maintenance of essential
govt/Public utilities
