Potential of Saba Banana (Musa acuminata
x balbisiana) Peels as Biodegradable
Resources in Sustainable Paper
Production
ABSTRACT / RATIONALE
This study explores the potential of utilizing Saba banana peels for paper fiber
production, addressing environmental concerns through sustainable methods. The
research involved preparing biodegradable resources, extracting fibers, conducting
drying processes, and analyzing resulting paper properties. Findings reveal that
paper made from Saba banana peels is eco-friendly, reducing waste and costs
while preserving trees. By combining Saba banana peels with scrap paper through
boiling, blending, and drying, a writable paper with unique properties is produced.
These outcomes present a promising pathway for waste reduction and
sustainability within the paper industry, offering valuable insights for future
practices.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
● What are the potential benefits of using
banana peels in paper production in terms
of: Financial Requirements and
STATEMENT OF Sustainability?
●
THE PROBLEM What is the manufacturing process of
paper production using banana peels in
terms of: Preparation of new materials;
Measuring; Pulping; Refining; Forming;
Drying; and Finishing?
● What paper produced from banana peels
differ in terms of physical properties:
Thickness, Width, Length, Texture, and
Color?
KEY LITERATURE
• Building on the work of De Jesus et al. (2022), this study aims to address gaps
in the existing research and explore the benefits of eco-friendly paper made
from banana peels.
• Zaini et al. (2021) examined the cellulose content of banana peel, an essential
component for papermaking. They also expressed concerns about air pollution
during the decomposition of banana peel.
In another study, Koni et al. (2022) found that kepok peels have an ideal crude
fiber content for paper production. The main goal of our research is to reduce
the use of traditional wood pulp paper.
METHODOLOGY
● The research involved ● The researchers used two-sample T-test
preparation of the biodegradable for the statistical treatment to determine if
materials; measuring the there is a significant difference between
materials which were banana the means of two groups which are paper
peels, scrap papers, and water; produced from the Saba banana peels
pulping done through boiling;
and traditional wood pulp. The formula
refining through blending;
used is illustrated below:
forming the pulps with the used
of mould and deckles; drying for
two to three days; and finishing
by removing the paper from
mould and deckles.
RESULTS / FINDINGS
1. Making paper from Saba banana peels is eco-friendly, saves peels from
waste, sustains trees, and costs less than traditional papers.
2. Saba banana peel paper is made by boiling and blending Saba banana
peels with scraped paper, then drying the mixture on moulds and deckles
for 2-3 days to produce the final product.
3. Combining Saba banana peels with scrap paper yields writable paper
that's smooth on one side, rough on the other, and slightly thicker than
wood pulp paper.
IMPLICATIONS
Bagabaldo et al. (2022) highlight the significant amount of
Saba banana by-products, such as peels, which are currently
underutilized and disposed of as solid waste. With Saba
banana being the most cultivated variety domestically, the
accumulation of these by-products presents an opportunity
for resource diversification. Therefore, the study implies that
exploring avenues like the production of Saba banana peel
paper could offer a sustainable solution, mitigating
environmental impact while adding value to sustainability.
CONCLUSION
The study showcases the potential of utilizing Saba banana peels as a
sustainable resource for paper production, offering a promising
alternative to traditional materials. The research demonstrates the
possibility for these biodegradable resources to contribute to
environmental conservation efforts while meeting the properties required
by the paper industry. By promoting the adoption of eco-friendly practices
and diversifying material sources, this study paves the way for a more
sustainable future in paper manufacturing.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Students may consider utilizing banana peels for DIY paper production
to reduce waste and save costs for stationery needs.
The researchers may explore additional uses and improvements in the
production process of banana peel paper to expand its purpose
and sustainability such as for packaging, seed pocket, paper plates, and
others.
The future researchers may explore additional uses and improvements
in the production process of Saba banana peel paper to expand its
purpose and sustainability such as for packaging, seed pocket, paper
plates, and others.
