KARMA

DEEPAN KARMA

 दीपन
 पचेन्नामं वह्निकृच्च दीपनं तद्यथा मिशिः ।
 Mahabut sanghatana- Vayu + Teja

 Rasa – katu, amla, lavan

 Virya- Ushna

 Vipak- katu/ amla/ madhur

 Guna- laghu, ushna, tikshna, ruksha


 Dosha - Pitta vardhak, vata vardhak(saman vayu), kapha shamak

 Dhatu - dhatwagni deepan

 Mala – sangrahi

 Agni – vardhan (may be ama pachan)

 Types - NA
 Rogaghnata – Agnimandya, kapha-medaj vikar,
aruchi, krumi, arsha, udar, gulma

 Examples – Hingu, Marich, Pippali, Nimbuk, Yavani

chitrak, shunthi + bhallatakasthi , hingu, amlavetas, marich, ajamoda

PACHAN KARMA

 पाचन
 पचत्यामं न वह्निं च कुर्यात्तद्धि पाचनम् ॥
नागकेसरवत् विद्यात् चित्रो दीपनपाचनः ।
 Mahabut sanghatana- Vayu + Teja

 Rasa – katu, tikta, amla, lavan

 Virya- Ushna / sheeta

 Vipak- amla/ madhur/ katu

 Guna- laghu, sheeta, tikshna, ruksha


 Dosha - Pitta vardhak, vata- kapha shamak

 Dhatu – not significant

 Mala – ama pachan (niram)

 Agni – vardhan / no effect (pachak strava increases / liver stimulant)

 Types - Amapachak, Amaja jwar, Amatisara


 Rogaghnata – Agnimandya, Ama dosha, Atisara, Jwar, Aruchi, Amavaat,
arsha, udar, grahani

 Examples – Musta, Nagakeshar, Triphala, Chitrak

 Clinical application – Shodhan & shaman chikitsa

Shodhan Karma

 शोधन

 स्थानाद्बहिर्नयेत् उर्ध्वमधो वा मलसंचयम् ।


 देहसंशोधनं तत् स्यात् देवदालि फलं यथा ।

 Pancha karma – Vaman, Virechan, Anuvasan, Niruha basti, Nasya


Vaman karma

 वमन
 अपक्वपित्तश्लेष्माणौ बलादूर्ध्वं नयेत्तु यत् ॥
 वमनं तद्धि विज्ञेयं मदनस्य फलं यथा ।
 Mahabut sanghatana- Vayu + Teja

 Rasa – madhur, katu, amla, lavan, tikta, kashay

 Virya- Ushna

 Vipak- katu

 Guna- laghu, ushna, tikshna, sukshma, vyavayi, vikasi


 Dosha - kapha nirharan

 Dhatu – shodhan

 Mala – shodhan

 Agni – agni saad ----agni vardhak


 Rogaghnata – Vamanarha vyadhi, vyakti
Nava jwar, amatisara

 Examples – Madanaphala, yashtimadhu, arishtak, vacha

SHAMAN KARMA

 संशमन
 न शोधयति न द्वेष्टि समान् दोषांस्तथोद्धतान् ।
 समीकरोति विषमान् शमनं तद्यथा अमृता ।
 Mahabut sanghatana- Akash

 Rasa – variable

 Virya- variable

 Vipak- variable

 Guna- variable
 Dosha – vata/ pitta/ kapha sanshaman

 Dhatu –

ANULOMAN KARMA

 अनुलोमन
 कृत्वा पाकं मलानां यद्भित्वा बन्धमधो नयेत् ॥
तच्चानुलोमनं ज्ञेयं यथा प्रोक्त हरीतकी ।
 Herbs that act as mild laxatives are called Anuloman dravya. Ama may
cause obstruction in the channels & these herbs digest sama mala &
eliminate them from the rectum.
 Loam = cilliary process
 Also known as Mrudu virechan
 Mahabut sanghatana- pruthvi + jala

 Rasa – katu, tikta, madhur

 Virya- shita or ushna

 Vipak- madhur

 Guna- guru, shit, snigdha, sara


 Dosha – pitta shodhan

 Dhatu – NA

 Mala – virechan

 Agni – vardhak
 Types- Vatanuloman & purish anuloman
 Rogaghnata – balak, vruddha, garbhini, mrudu prakruti, adhman, aatop, udar shool
 Examples – Haritaki, draksha, dugdha

STRANSAN KARMA
 स्रंसन
 पक्तव्यं यदप्क्तव्यैव श्लिष्टं कोष्टॆ मलादिकम् ॥
नयत्यधः स्रंसनम् तद्यथा स्यात्कॄतामलकः ।
 Herbs that act as mild purgatives are called Stransan dravya. These herbs remove
the malas which are sticking to the intestinal walls & expel them from the body.
 These herbs are not ama packak. They add moisture to stool & increases
peristaltic movements.
 Both pakwa & apakwa mala is eliminated.
 Stransan dravya are stronger than Anuloman dravya.
 Also known as mild purgative/ stool softener/ sukha virechak.
 Mahabut sanghatana- pruthvi + jala & vayu+teja

 Rasa – katu, tikta, madhur

 Virya- shita or ushna

 Vipak- madhur or katu

 Guna- guru, shita or ushna, snigdha


 Dosha – pitta shodhan

 Dhatu – NA

 Mala – virechan

 Agni – NA
 Rogaghnata – Pitta Pradhan vyadhi
 Examples – Aragwadha, Erand, Mrudvika, Triphala

 Clinical application – Shodhan chikitsa


BHEDAN KARMA
 भेदन
 मलादिकमबद्धं च बद्धं वा पिण्डितं मलैः ॥
 भित्वाधः पातयति तद्भेदनं कटुकि यथा ।
 Herbs that act as drastic purgatives are called Bhedan dravya. They break stony
hard stools and remove liquid mala as well as aggravated doshas from the
digestive tract.
 These herbs are increases peristaltic movements.
 Forceful expulsion of consolidated matter
 Bhedan dravya are strongest dravya among all.
 Also known as tikshna or tivra virechak.
 Mahabut sanghatana- teja + vayu

 Rasa – katu, tikta

 Virya- ushna

 Vipak- katu

 Guna- ushna, tikshna, laghu, ruksha, vishad


 Dosha – pitta shodhan

 Dhatu – dhatugat mala shodhan

 Mala – virechan

 Agni – NA
 Types- 1. Antra mala bhedan 1. Antargat/ Internal
 2. Yakrut pliha bhedan 2. Bahya / External
 3. Vidradhi bhedan / Disintegrator
 Indications – Acute conditions (Quick acting), Vidradhi, Gulma, Pliha roga

 Contraindications- Children, Old age persons, Pregnant women, Postpartum women

 Examples – Jayapal, Katuka, Arka, Chitrak, Bhalltak, Swarnakshiri

 Bhedaniya mahakashay
RECHAN/ VIRECHAN KARMA
 रेचन
विपक्वं यदपक्वं वा मलादि द्रवतां नयेत् ॥
रेचयत्यपि तत्ज्ञेयं रेचनं त्रिवृता यथा ।
 Herbs that act as strong purgatives are called Virechan dravya.
 Watery stool due to addition of water by altering intestinal wall movement
 They forcefully remove both sama & niram mala in their liquid state from body.
 Also known as simple purgatives.
 Mutra virechak dravya / gana
 Mahabut sanghatana- pruthvi + jala

 Rasa – katu, tikta, madhur

 Virya- ushna or shita

 Vipak- madhur or katu

 Guna- guru, shita, snigdha OR ushna, tikshna, laghu


 Dosha – pitta shodhan

 Dhatu – dhatu Shodhan

 Mala – virechan

 Agni – vardhan

 Types- 1. Koshtha- mrudu, Madhya, tikshna


2. karya- anuloman, stransan, bhedan, tikshna virechan
3. bala- sara, anuloman, stransan, bhedan
4. Upayuktanga(useful part)- mula, twak, kshira, phal, patra, swaras, tail
 Indications – Pittaj vyadhi , Pitta- kaphaj, pitta-vataj vyadhi
Jirna jwar, gara visha, krumi, malavashthamb, kamala, pandu, halimak,
pliharoga, urdhwa raktapitta, amlapitta, unmad, gulma, kushtha, vatarakta,
udar, chhardi

 Contraindications- Virechan anarha vyakti

 Examples – Trivrutta, Draksha, Erand
