Population Pyramid - R1 1

A population pyramid is a graphical representation of a population's distribution by sex and age group, typically shaped like a pyramid when the population is growing. There are three types of population pyramids: expansive, stationary, and constrictive, each indicating different population growth patterns and characteristics. Population pyramids are useful for understanding demographic composition, dependency ratios, and potential future population growth.

POPULATION

PYRAMID
Presented by: Myde Agus and John Mark Alcantara
What is a Population Pyramid?

A population pyramid is the graphical

representation of the distribution of the
population by sex, and age group. It takes the
shape of a pyramid when the population is
growing. Population pyramids are also known
as “age pyramids” because it is a graphical
representation of age.
Structure of a Population Pyramid
3 Types of Population Pyramid

• Expansive – This type of population pyramid indicates rapid population

growth. Examples of countries having this type of pyramid are India and
Nigeria. Here in these countries, the fertility rate is usually high but life
expectancy is very less. So the base of the pyramid is wide and tapers
towards the top with a triangular shape.
• Stationary – A type of population pyramid that represents stable population
size, with relatively even age distribution. That's why the name is stationary
because it means the birth and death rates are equal and the population is
neither increasing nor decreasing. This type of population pyramid is
generally common in developed countries such as America.
• Constrictive – This shows a declining population with narrower base
bacause of declining birth rates, low fertility rates, high life expectancy, and
low mortality rates. This type of graph is seen in Japan.
Expansive Population Pyramid
Characteristics:

● Wide base, indicating a high

birth rate.
● Narrow top, showing a lower
life expectancy.
● Rapid population growth,
common in developing
countries.
● High dependency ratio, with
more young dependents.
Stationary Population Pyramid
Characteristics:
● Even distribution across
age groups, indicating stable
birth and death rates.
● Moderate base and top,
showing a balanced
population.
● Common in developed
countries with steady
population growth.
● Suggests a stable
workforce and sustainable
economic growth.
Constrictive Population
Characteristics:
Pyramid
● Narrow base, indicating low birth
rates.
● Wider middle and top, showing an
aging population.
● Common in highly developed
countries with declining birth rate
such as Japan.
● Require policies to encourage
higher birth rates or manage aging
populations.
5 Stages of Population
Pyramid
Uses of Population Pyramid
There are various uses of the population pyramid:

• It tells about the composition of the population of any

particular area.
• It tells about the number of dependent individuals
(Children, elderly people) in any area.
• It also tells us about the difference in sexes of any
given area.
• It also tells about the mortality rate and fertility rate.
• Can be used to find data on the future growth of the
population
