A Level Course Outline
Performing (30%) - Coursework submitted by April in Year 13.

Total performance time of 8 minutes (can be a solo and/or ensemble) - difficulty aim Grade 6/7 standard
It is advised that students are having instrumental/vocal lessons to support with this area of the course

Composing (30%) - Coursework submitted by April in Year 13.


2 compositions: Choice of 1 free composition or a composition from a choice of set briefs +
composition assessing musical techniques. The total time for the composition component is 6 minutes.

Listening (40%) - One written 2hr 10min exam takes place in June in Year 13.
Section A: Areas of study and dictation
Three questions related to the set works (audio and skeleton score given).
One short melody/rhythm exercise
Section B: Extended response
Essay one asks students to draw links from their study of the set works to the music heard as an
unfamiliar extract.
Essay two gives a choice of four questions that ask students to evaluate the musical elements, context
