WHAT IS FRACTION
?
Fractions are for counting parts of something.
Fractions represent the parts of a whole or collection of
objects. A fraction has two parts. The number on the top
of the line is called the numerator. It tells how many
equal parts of the whole or collection are taken. The
number below the line is called the denominator. It
shows the total number of equal parts the whole is
divided into or the total number of the same objects in a
collection.
The word fraction actually comes from the Latin
"fractio" which means 'a breaking down, a division'.

TYPES OF FRACTIONS
General
Need of fractions:
Consider the following scenario
Can you finish the whole cake ??
If not, how much cake did you eat?
1 is not the answer, neither is 0.
This suggests that we need a new
kind of number i.e FRACTIONS
General
PARTS OF FRACTIONS ?
The denominator tells us how many
congruent parts the whole is divided into. Thus
HELLO THERE! I
this number cannot be 0 (b).
AM THE
a
The numerator tells us how many NUMERATOR
such pieces are being considered (a).
HELLO THERE! I AM THE
DENOMINATOR

Application of fractions in everyday life :
1. Fraction of seconds
The shutter speed of a camera is measured in fractions. The setting of this is important, to
capture perfect photos. Usually, a still image is captured at a speed of 1/100th of a
second. For objects in motion, we set a faster shutter speed of about 1/1000th of a second
to avoid blur images.
2. Timetable
Every time you make a timetable for a subject and divide it into portions
for ease of study, you are simply using fractions to do it. For e.g.: if we are
opting to study 5 chapters in Physics out of 10, it can simply be
represented as 5/10- and again Fractions!
3. Sports
Fractions are continuously used in sports to keep a count of the variables that impact
the result. In athletics, the distance jumped or thrown or the time taken to complete a
race is always shown in fractions. Fractions are used to analyse the performance of a
player or a team.

4.Construction
Accurate measurements of the dimensions such as height, length and breadth are required when a certain project is under
construction. For measurement, we use units like inches and feet. Let's say you want the carpenter to
build you a table, and you specify dimensions such as six feet, two and half a quarter inches. The
carpenter uses the fraction concept to break down that measurement and cut the wood according to
your requirements. Without the concept of fractions, it wouldn’t be possible to carry out such
measures.
5.Medicine
Another application of fractions in daily life is in the medical field. There are a variety of uses of
fractions in the medical field. Most of the medical tests performed by medical professionals
display their results in fractions or decimals. The presence of an abnormality or disease can be
discovered even with a slight change in the value.
Fractions are even more important when it comes to the research and development of new drugs
and vaccines, where accurate measurements of different chemicals are required to create a new
drug.
6. Tests and Exams
Scores of tests and exams are generally expressed as fractions,
like 1820.

Fitness
We use fractions to understand our body mass index (BMI) to determine whether we are in a healthy range of body mass or not.
Following a recipe
Recipes sometimes suggest using 12 a teaspoon of sugar, 34 tablespoon of
salt. Some recipes also have quantities to serve 2. If we are making the
same dish to serve 3 people, fractions are used to adjust the ingredients
accordingly.

WHAT DID WE LEARN ?
Think of a house without a foundation. It will be built on the sand or rubble
and when the storms come, your house will be wet and damp. The floor will
be muddy and you will most probably get very sick, and at some point your
house will collapse.
Fractions are like that foundation. It's a much needed part to keep up the
walls later on. Fractions play a crucial role in the development of
mathematical understanding and skills. As a fundamental building block,
fractions offer an essential stepping stone to understanding more advanced
topics in mathematics such as decimals, percentages, and algebra.
Learning fractions concepts enables us to gain confidence while working with
fractions daily.
Proper nutrition is essential at every stage of life. The Nutrition Facts label on packaged
foods and beverages is a valuable tool to help people make more informed decisions
about the nutritional content of the foods they plan to purchase and eat.
Most people exceed the recommended limits for saturated fat, sodium, and added
sugars, so the Nutrition Facts label can help you reduce consumption.
There are other nutrients, such as dietary fiber, vitamin D, calcium, iron and
potassium, that many people do not consume enough of. Checking the label can help
you identify foods high in these nutrients to eat more of.
So next time you’re trying to decide what to eat, check the Nutrition Facts label and
take a step toward a long-term healthy lifestyle.
