LESSON 3
ELECTRON
DISTRIBUTION
Prepared by: Cristy Joy L. Aranas
WHAT IS It is the distribution of
ELECTRON electrons of an atom in
atomic orbitals.
DISTRIBUTION?
determines the chemical reactions the atom can
participate in and determines the kinds of
molecules that atoms can combine into to form
more complicated substances.
TYPES OF NOTATION
ELECTRON CONFIGURATION
1 uses the symbols of the orbitals and the
number of electrons that occupy each
orbital.
TYPES OF NOTATION
ORBITAL DIAGRAM
2 consists of boxes and arrows that represent
the orbitals and the electrons.
GENERAL RULES IN
ELECTRON DISTRIBUTION
1 Aufbau
Principle
dictates the manner in which
electrons are filled in the atomic
orbitals of an atom in its ground
state. It states that electrons are
filled into atomic orbitals in the
increasing order of orbital energy
level.
GENERAL RULES IN
ELECTRON DISTRIBUTION
2 Pauli Exclusion
Principle
states that no two electrons
in the same atom can have
identical values for all four of
their quantum numbers
GENERAL RULES IN
ELECTRON DISTRIBUTION
3 Hund's Rule of
Maximum
Multiplicity
suggests that the most stable
arrangement of electrons in
subshells is the one with the
greatest number of parallel
spins
