The term
“indigenous” refers to the
notion of a place-based
human ethnic culture
that has not migrated
from its homeland and is
not a settler or colonial
population. To be
indigenous, is therefore
by definition different
from being of a world
culture.
Indigenous peoples are
inheritors and practitioners of
unique cultures and ways of
relating to people and the
environment.
They have retained social,
cultural, economic and
political characteristics that
are distinct from those of the
dominant societies in which
they live.
