Poverty

B Y: J AY
What is Poverty?
Poverty is about not having
enough money and resources
to meet basic needs. It leads
to hunger, malnutrition, a lack
of education and other
necessities, social
discrimination, and the lack of
participation in decision-
making

Did you know that more than 10%(about 800million people!) of the world’s population lives in extreme

What Effect Does
Poverty Have?

Poverty can affect people in many ways, it

can mean that children miss out on fun
activities, that other kids take for granted.
It can harm health, social and emotional
health, and education. It harms childhoods
and their futures. According to CPAG(Child
Poverty Action Group) children growing up
in poverty are more likely to on average do
less well in education. They are less likely
to achieve standard benchmarks at 11 and
are much less likely to get into selective
institutions. This later impacts job
opportunities

The poverty headcount increased from

51% in 2009 to 82% in 2016, now
residing at about 80%. The massive
jump was due to a lot of conflict. The
IRC( International Rescue Committee)
has been helping South Sudan since
1989 and has assisted about 1.5 million
people as of 2023. The main cause of
poverty in South Sudan is food
insecurity about half of South Sudan
faces food insecurity(5.83 million or
about 46%)

Target 1.2
”By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men,
women, and children of all ages living in poverty in all its
dimensions according to regional definitions.” Said the UN

Each target has its own “indicators” – Indicators help

measure if the targets are being met. Target 1.2 has 2
indicators

1) “The proportion of the population living below the

national poverty line, by sex and age.”

2) “The proportion of men, women, and children of all

ages living in poverty in all its dimensions according to
national definitions.”

Multidimensional poverty - considers various things people face daily, such as poor
health, lack of education, inadequate living standards, and lack of income.
What Steps Has
the UN Taken to
Stop Poverty
- Microfinance Initiatives, the UN
provides small loans to help
individuals start or expand
businesses.
- UNESCO focuses on helping provide
education for all, which is
important for eradicating poverty
- The UN collaborates with
organizations and governments, to
help stop poverty
How I Would
Help Stop
Poverty
- I would go around different
places and educate people about
poverty to raise awareness
- I would go and educate children
in poverty about basic stuff
- I would support Poverty related
organizations
