What are colloids?
• Colloidsare mixtures with characteristics part way
between a solution and a suspension.
• However, it is a mixture with particles evenly scattered in
a dispersing medium without settling down so its not a
suspension, because suspension settles down at the
bottom.
• It is not a solution either because some parts of the
mixture does not dissolve completely BUT it looks like a
solution because the parts that did not dissolve
completely are too small to be seen.

Importance of Colloids
• Natural colloids such as blood, clouds, and fog are
basic for living things.
• Numerous colloids such as milk, butter, gelatin, jam,
jelly and other creamy substances such as
mayonnaise and whipped cream, are used as food or
ingredients in preparing food.
• Some colloids used as medicines and cosmetics.
Others are used in the office supplies ,in farming and
protective and decorative functions.
Importance of Colloids
• Sollike paint is used for protection and
decoration. Toothpaste a sol, is used for
personal hygiene.
• Aerosol
like perfume spray are used for good
grooming. Soap lather as foam for cleaning
and gel like silica are used to protect
medicines in tablet or capsule form.
