National Artists of the Arts (NAA) recipients work with many
other artists to incorporate their designs into a unified
artwork and contribute collectively to the art.

Manuel Conde is an
actor and director who
directed and produced
several notable films,
including Genghis Khan
(1950), a historical epic
critically acclaimed locally
and internationally. He
was proclaimed National
Artist for Film in 2009.

Carlos "Botong" Francisco was a significant figure in
Philippine art and is known for his mural painting
depicting Philippine history, culture, and folklore. His
works are found in public buildings and institutions, such
as the Manila City Hall, the National Museum of Fine Arts,
and the Cultural Center of the Philippines.

word of “Bayani” which
simply means “Hero”. With
this, this painting shows a
hero to one another.

The libretto of the Tales of the
Manuvu was written by the poet
Bienvenido Lumbera, who was
awarded the National Artist for
Literature title in 2006. The
performance was choreographed by
Alice Reyes, who was awarded
National Artist for Dance in 2014.

Salvador Bernal was given the National Artist Award in
2003 for theater design. He was known as the “Father of
Philippine Stage Design” because of his innovative
contributions to Philippine stage design.

Francisco V. Coching was a pioneering Filipino
illustrator who used komiks to raise awareness of
colonialism and explore folkloric and mythic themes. He
was posthumously named a National Artist for the Visual
Arts in 2014.

Gerardo de Leon was awarded a National Artist
for Film in 1982. He produced several anti-
American propaganda movies. His talent in
acting and directing brought him to the famous
movies Noli Me Tángere (1961), El Filibusterismo
(1962), and Huwag Mo Akong Limutin (1960).

The playwright, novelist, and
poet Nick Joaquin,
recognized as a National Artist
for Literature in 1976, wrote
the renowned play "A Portrait
of the Artist as Filipino" in
1950. It was directed by
Lamberto V. Avellana.

Lamberto C. Avellana was a National Artist for Film in
1976. He was the first director to use the motion picture
camera to establish point-of-view. He was also called the
"Boy Wonder of Philippine Movies" as early as 1939.

Daisy H. Avellana's portrayal of Candida Marasigan in the


stage and film adaptations of Portrait of the Artist as Filipino
by Nick Joaquin is widely regarded as her most enduring
legacy. She was a highly acclaimed Filipino actress who
brought depth, emotion, and authenticity to the character,
captivating audiences with her performance. 23
