Introdution
• Electronics in Civil Engineering is widely used
in the field of Structural Health Monitoring.
• Civil Engineering student can get a chance to
work on a multidisciplinary project like
working on damage assessment using self-
powered wireless
• Where findings may include : calculating how
voltage produced by the sensors varies with
the increase in the damage of the structure.
• Application of signal processing: To remove
the noise produced due to external sources. In
my project, the MTS machine produced noise
(higher frequency) due to its own vibration. To
get rid of it Low pass filtering technique
(removes high frequency signals) is used so as
to obtain data produced only by the vibration
of the structure.
• Compressed Sensing Technique: To extract
only sparse data from these sensors, which
stores the most important or relevant data
• Aside from the practical and direct use of
electronic components in civil engineering, Like
temperature, humidity and scales and stress
sensors, Building of infrastructure for power
stations, cities and industrial centers
• Apart from these few examples there are many
more direct uses of electronics in civil engineering
professional practice. A thorough understanding is
important if you are using and applying technology
as a profession.
• There are electronic gauges and sensors in a
structure that can measure strains, stresses or
minuscule movements. They are used mostly
in Power Stations.
• the main application area of civionics is
currently the use of electronics for structural
health monitoring(SHM) of civil structures,
particularly photonics(Fiber Optic Bragg
Grating).
What are 5 basic uses of electronics in civil engineering?
• Mostly in the form of sensors. If you want to use the
term electronics in broad-spectrum
1) Computer aided design of buildings
2)Usage of telemetry to perform measurements of plot.
3) Usage of sensors to measure stress on high profile
buildings and suspension bridges.
4)Structural health monitoring
5)Remote sensing to observe areas from a much better
and bigger perspective
etc.
What is the role of intelligent transportation system?
• Intelligent Transport System (ITS) aims to achieve traffic
efficiency by minimizing traffic problems. It enriches users
with prior information about traffic, local convenience real-
time running information, seat availability etc. It aims to
reduce time of commuters as well as enhances their safety
and comfort
• What are examples of intelligent transportation systems?
• Some of the most prominent ITS technologies already
deployed across the country include electronic toll
collection, ramp meters, red light cameras, traffic signal
coordination, transit signal priority, and traveler information
systems
INSTRUMENTATION OF BRIDGES FOR STRUCTURAL HEALTH
MONITORING
• A study
• As the state of the art in bridge design is advancing toward the performance-based design, it
becomes increasingly important to monitor and evaluate the long-term structural
performance of bridges.
• Such information is essential in developing performance criteria for design. In this research,
sensor systems for long-term structural performance monitoring have been installed on
two highway bridges. Preliminary vibration measurement and data analysis have been
performed on these instrumented bridges.
• On one bridge, ambient vibration data have been collected, based on which natural
frequencies and mode shapes have been extracted using various methods and compared
with those obtained by the preliminary finite element analysis. On the other bridge, braking
and bumping vibration tests have been carried out using a water truck in addition to
ambient vibration tests.
• Natural frequencies and mode shapes have been derived and the results by the breaking
and bumping vibration tests have been compared. For the development of a 3 dimensional
baseline finite element model, the new methodology using a neural network is proposed.
The proposed one have been verified and applied to develop the baseline model of the
bridge.
INSTRUMENTATION OF BUILDINGS
• The structural system for the building can be instrumented to
allow people access to structural system data, wind speed
data, and foundation pressures enabling this data from the
building to be integrated into the teaching environment.
• The building can display aspects of the building management
system for public viewing.
• An array of weather stations can be installed on the roof,
allowing the researchers to study wind turbulence, correlate
wind speed to structural system response, and other
educational pursuits related to alternative power generation
opportunities in urban environments.
Materials testing
• Materials testing helps us to understand and
quantify whether a specific material or
treatment is suitable for a particular
application.
• With the wide variety of materials and
treatments available in the marketplace,
testing can help narrow down the choices to
the most appropriate selection for the
intended use.
What is material testing equipment?
• Testing machine, Machine used in materials
science to determine the properties of a
material.
• Machines have been devised to measure
tensile strength, strength in compression,
shear, and bending (see strength of materials),
ductility, hardness, impact strength (see
impact test), fracture toughness, creep, and
fatigue.
What are the types of materials used in testing?
• Materials testing breaks down into five major
categories: mechanical testing; testing for
thermal properties; testing for electrical
properties; testing for resistance to corrosion,
radiation, and biological deterioration; and
nondestructive testing.
Example of Intelligent signalling in CE
• The ISS monitors traffic conditions on the BRT corridor and suggests
control strategies via a state-of-the-art command and control centre.
• The Intelligent Signalling System (ISS) controls, monitors and manages
all traffic and pedestrian signals in the BRT corridor. The system is of
modular design such that it can be expanded in future or linked with
an Area Traffic Control System (ATC) in subsequent phases.
• The ISS system includes the standard control, safety and fault
monitoring/reporting facilities inherent in any modern ISS system and
utilizes state-of-the-art systems/software and equipment which have
been successfully implemented in other cities/countries.
• The System exercises real-time control and monitors the traffic signal
controller operation with microscopic detail.
