MATERIALS FOR
ELT
• Materials for ELT
include anything which can
be used to facilitate the
learning of a language.
• Teaching materials are
major elements in assisting
teachers in achieving better
teaching and students'
desired learning
results(Tonawanik &
Donavanik, 2019).
MATERIALS FOR
ELT
• Textbooks-Books
• Games and Puzzles
• Interactive tools
• Pictures
• Poster or Visual Aid
• Videos
• Films
THE ROLE OF MATERIALS
• A source of activities for learner practice and communicative interaction
• A reference source for learners on grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation
and so on
• A source of stimulation and ideas for classroom activities
• A syllabus support for less experienced teachers who have yet to gain
confidence
THE ROLE OF MATERIALS
AUTHECTIC VS CREATED MATERIALS
non-authentic/ created materials are especially designed for language
learning purposes. The language in non-authentic texts is artificial and
unvaried, concentrating on something that has to be taught.
AUTHECTIC MATERIALS
• Authentic Materials refer to any kind of materials such as texts,
photographs, video selections and other teaching resources that were not
prepared for pedagogical purposes.
• Are produced for a purpose other than teaching the target language
(Gardner & Miller, 1999).
• Simply means that the text, video, or audio material has not been created
with English language teaching in mind.
AUTHECTIC MATERIALS
It is material not designed for teaching itself but it may favor practice in the acquisition of a
new language
• Blog
• Daily
• Journals
• Videos
• Games and Puzzles
• Music
• Films
• Advertising
• songs
• literature
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
OF CREATED MATERIALS
Advantages
Disadvantages
• They provide structure and a syllabus for a
program • They may contain inauthentic
• They can be a useful form of professional language
development for teachers, and foster • They may distort content
autonomous learning strategies in
students. • They may not reflect students’
• They help standardize instruction needs
• They maintain quality • They can deskill teachers
• They provide a variety of learning resource • They are expensive
• They are efficient
• They can provide effective language models
ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES
OF AUTHENTIC MATERIALS
Advantages
Disadvantages
They provide authentic cultural information about
the target culture
• They contain more unfamiliar language
They provide exposure to real language that learners can possibly cope with
They will increase variety and spontaneity in • Authentic materials is a burden for
classes teachers
The relate more closely to learner’s need
They support a more creative approach to teaching • Culturally inappropriate
They are more motivating
• “…Teachers thus use a
MATERIALS mixture of created and
DEVELOPMENT authentic materials
FOR LANGUAGE because both have
LEARNING their advantages as
well as limitations.
Furthermore, the
distinction between
authentic and created
materials is becoming
blurred, because may
published materials
incorporate authentic
texts and other real-
world sources
(Richards, 200,1 p.
Informative: inform the student what is
the goal in language learning
Instructional: guide the student to
practice the language
TYPES OF
MATERIALS Experiential: they give the student the
opportunity to explore and use the
language in different environments
Exploratory: Encourage the student to
find new ways of learning in the
language
HOMEWORK
Write a few sentences about….
• Think of your own experiences…What type of materials are
facilitative for you?
