Lesson 7 - Network Topologies PowerPoint

The document outlines a lesson plan focused on network topologies, specifically star and mesh topologies. It includes objectives for students to understand the definitions, layouts, advantages, and disadvantages of these topologies. Activities involve completing a wordsearch or crossword, creating a comparison table, and engaging in discussions about the characteristics of different network topologies.

Network Topologies
Lesson Objectives
Develop knowledge on Network Topology.

All must be able to explain the term ‘Network Topology’.

Most should be able to explain the layout/features of star and mesh
topology.
Some could explain the layout/features of other topologies.
What is meant by Network
Topology?

Network topology describes the layout of connections in a network.

Star Topology
The Star topology has a central device such as a hub, switch or
server.

It is often used by small organisations because they are efficient and

simple to set up.
Star Topology - Advantages
Star networks are reliable – if one connection fails it does not affect other
users.

Data collisions are rare – each node has its own cable connecting to the
central device.

Offers good security – No workstation can interact with another without

going through the central node first.

Scalability – Simple process to add/remove a new node.

Star - Disadvantages
Expense – Star networks are costly as the network grows because of the
amount of cables required.

Technical Expertise – A large star network needs technicians to set up and

run it.

Network Failure – If the central device fails, the whole network goes down.

Equipment – A star network requires a high performance server/switch as

all data goes through the central device.
Mesh Topology
A mesh topology has no central node. Each node is connected to
another on the network. Wi-Fi is usually used to connect nodes.
Mesh - Advantages
If one node fails, other nodes allow data transmission to continue
around the network making it reliable.
Mesh networks can handle high data traffic rates.
Devices can easily join or leave the network without affecting the
overall quality.
Data can be sent simultaneously.
Mesh - Disadvantages
The number of connections in the network will increase significantly
as more nodes are added.

If the size of the network is too large, the cost of connecting nodes
becomes too expensive and complex.

Data is transmitted through Wi-Fi therefore it has a potential issue

with data security.
Activity (20 mins)
Research into different topologies and complete your table.
