Reciprocating Saw Mechanism Analysis

The document discusses the mechanics and analysis of a reciprocating saw, detailing its internal structure, degree of freedom, and various analyses including position, velocity, acceleration, and force. It includes calculations for the saw's kinematic properties and graphical representations of the mechanisms involved. The assignment is part of a group project for a course in Electromechanical Engineering at the College of Engineering and Technology.

Reciprocating saw
Introduction
A reciprocating saw is a type of machine-powered
saw in which the cutting
action is achieved through a push-and-pull
("reciprocating") motion of the
blade. The original trade name Sawzall is often used
in the United States ,
where Milwaukee Electric Tool first produced a tool
of this type in
• 1951.
• This type of saw is also known as "hognose" or
"recipsaw", which has a larg blade resembling that of
a gigsaw.

• It's a machine which uses, a slider (reciprocating)

mechanism.
The internal structure
The kinematic diagram

Number of links (n) = 4

Number of joints(j) = 4(3R,1P)
Calculating the DOF
• When we find out the DOF (mobility(M)) of this type
of mechanism, we use this formula :
• M= 3(n-1)- 2jp - jh
• n= 4
• jp= 4(3R&1P)
• jh= 0
• M= 3(4-1)-2(4)-0
• M(DOF) = 1
• So ; a reciprocating saw has a degree of freedom of 1.
• For the given slider
crank mechanism ,on
the internal structure of
the reciprocating
saw ,we can put all the
necessary analysises ;
• Given:
• Ө2=50º
• L3=3.25m
• L2=0.65m
• L1=0.5m
• ω2=10rad/s CCW
Position analysis
• using graphical method we can put the solutions by
measuring the required one

• Measuring from the diagram ;

• Ө3=18º
• Ƴ=112º
• L4=3.51m
Velocity analysis
• by drawing the velocity polygon we can find out the required
velocities by measuring .
• we can find out VB value from the given info: .
VB  2l 2 10rad / s 0.65 6.5m / s

• measuring from the velocity polygon → VCB=4.095m/s and

VC=6.468m/s using the given scale.
VCB 4.095m / s
Thus:  3   1.26rad / s CCW
l3 3.25
Acceleration analysis
• by drawing the acceleration polygon we can find out
the required accelerations by measuring using
graphical method:
AB  ACB  AC
AB t  AB n  ACB n  ACBt  AC t  AC n
Where, AB t & AC n 0
n
AB 

VCB 2


4 .095 m / s 2

 5.16m / s 2
l3 3 .25 
 
the acceleration polygon is
graphicaly expressed as ;

• by measuring from the above polygon ACt and

ACBtwill be:
• ACB 50.7m / s using the given scale above on
t 2

AC t 31.2m / s 2 the graph. ACBt 50.7 m / s 2

3   15.6rad / s 2CCW
l3 3.25
Force Analaysis
when 2KN force is acting on link 4(sliding part) ,the diagram is looks like as given below:
There are 3 forces acting on link 4 which
are expressed graphically as given below:

• so the force polygone

becomes:
• on the force polygone expressed above , the force
F34 is calculated usig graphically by taking the ,
• Scale: 2KN: 0.5mm
using the above scale , F34 = (0.53mm)(2 KN )
0.5mm
2.12KN

by using this value we can draw the rest links (link 2

and link 3):
so remaining two links looks like as given below:
• on link 2 , a couple force is formed having same
magnitude with different direction :
F32 & F12 = 2.12KN
• on link 3 , two forces are formed which are equal in
magnitude and dferent in direction:
F43 & F23 = 2.12KN
where the relation of all the forces is given
as: T Fr
( 2.1 2KN )(0.6mm)
T 1.2 72NM

F34 = -F43 = F23 = -F32 = F12

using the distance r between the two couple forces, we

can calculate
T Frthe Torque on the crank(link 2) as given
below: T (2.12KN )(0.6mm)
T 1.272NM CCW 
