UNIT 2(CONNECTIVITY)
Digital communication
There are four ways digital that digital device communicates. Namely:
Satellite
Broadcast
Wired
Wireless
1.Satellite communication
Satellite transmits data and receives data from digital devices. Digital devices use antennae to
receive radio signals that satellite transmits.
There are four uses of satellite communication which include:
1. GPS-Navigation aid makes use of GPS signals to calculate the exact location of a device.
2. Television-A video signal from a broadcaster is transmitted through a large antenna to
earth to one or more satellites which then broadcasts the signal back down to earth. A set-
top box decodes the signal and converts it so that it is ready to be sent to the television.
3. Telephone-People in rural areas place calls using satellite telephones
4. Military-The military use satellites for communication systems such as Global demand and
control system.
2.Broadcast communication
Transmitters broadcast television and radio signals that are received by viewer’s antennae.
3.Wired communication
Devices can use cables to connect to each other via wired connection
Connection Type Use
HDMI Digital video connection
S/PDIF Digital audio connection
Mini jack Personal headphones
USB Storage transfer
Ethernet Networking.
4.Wireless communication.
Devices can use wireless connectivity to communicate to each other. There are four ways
of wireless communication. Namely:
WIFI
Bluetooth
3G&4G
Infra-red (IR)
Near-Field communication (NFC)
Digital devices can communicate device to device and by using networks.
There are three types of networks. Namely:
1. Local Area Network (LAN). Its a network that connects digital devices that are in a
small geographical area.
2. Wide Area Network (WAN). Its a network that spreads over a large geographical area
3. Personal area network (PAN). Its a group of connected devices that are all near an
individual user.
*Digital devices can also communicate through tethering. Tethering is connecting a host device
that uses a mobile broadband connection with one or more other devices.
Wireless communication
1.WIFI-is a wireless technology used to connect devices to a network.
2.Bluetooth-Is a wireless technology that lets devices connect over short distances
3.3G & 4G-They are used to provide internet access to mobile devices.
4.Infra-Red-They have short range and the transmitters must have a clear line of sight to
receivers
5.Near Field Communication-Uses close proximity RFID (Radio Frequence Identification) chips.
WIFI BLUETOOTH
Range Long Short
Bandwidth High Low
Power High Low
Security High Low
Can connect multiple devices Yes Limited
simultaneously (Usually has to
be paired)
