Why is literacy so important?

- Approximately 40% of students across the nation cannot read at a
basic level.
- Nearly 70% of low-income 4th grader students cannot read at a basic
level.
- 60% of the behavioral problems occur during reading assignments –
group or independently.
- More than 4 in 10 preschoolers, 5 in 10 toddlers, and 6 in 10 babies
are not read to regularly. (DOE 1999)
